Here is a game-by-game breakdown of the Iowa bracket. Colgate - 55, UVSC • 42 The Wolverines managed only 14 points in the first half and shot a combined 35% from the field in a 13-point loss to the Colgate Raiders of the Patriot League. "It was a tough opening game," said UVSC Coach Dick Hunsaker. "We grew fast and fought through a real tough night on the offensive end. Colgate did a great job defensively and was well prepared." The Raiders started the game on a 9-0 run and never really looked back commanding a double-digit lead throughout most of the contest. UVSC cut the lead to ten late in the game led by Matt Peterson, who topped Wolverine scorers with 17 points, but Colgate never let down. Kyle Roemer and Kendall Chones led the Raiders scoring 13 apiece. Iowa - 84, Maryland-Eastern Shore - 41 The pre-season 20th ranked Hawkeyes more than doubled the score of the outmanned Hawks. Greg Brunner led the way for Iowa with 16 points and seven rebounds. Point guard Jeff Horner scored 16 as well. The 45-point margin was the biggest for the Big 10 school since a 59-point defeat of Puerto Rico- Mayaguez back in 1997. With the Wolverines clinging to a three-point lead, UMES' Antonio McMillion converted on a three point play to tie the game at 67 with 21 seconds to go. UVSC had a chance to win it at the buzzer, but Sylvester Allison's shot fell well off the rim. The Hawks took their first lead of the game in OT by jumping out with the first six points of the extra period. UVSC fought back, down only 73-71; but Allison with a chance to tie it at the line, only converted on one of two free throws. l *We have a lot of work ahead of us," said Hunsaker. "This was a terrific experience for us to find out what we need to do better as a team. We need to bring our hard hat and shovel and dig a little to work." The Wolverines had to play all of overtime without starters Pierre Thomas, Ben Davoe and David Heck who had fouled out of the game at that point. UVSC led by as many as 14 in the first half, but Maryland-Eastern Shore went on a 15-5 run to cut the Wolverine's halftime lead to only five. Utah Valley built their lead back up to 12 in the second half before UMES finally tied the score. Matt Peterson again led all Wolverine scorers, this time with 21 points on 7-14 shooting. Utah Valley drops Xo 0-2 on the year. Iowa - 73, Colgate - 51 Greg Brunner once again paced Iowa, this time in the championship game with Colgate. The Hawkeyes led by as many as 19 in the first half before the Raiders stormed back to within six. But Iowa then went on a 13-0 run of their own and never looked back. Kendall Chones scored 20 for Colgate, while Iowa had four players score double figures. Iowa advances in the 16-team tournament to play #10 Kentucky in the semi-finals.
