Photo courtesy of Warner Brother; Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire Luke Hickman Movie Editor I have decided that there are two types of Harry Potter fans: the purists and the non-purists. The purists have all read the books and are disappointed in the films. The non-purists come in two forms: those who haven't read the books, and those who've read them and accept the changes made for the big screen. One thing that the purists need to learn, just as the Lord of the Ring fans did, is that sacrifices are needed to make the transition to film. Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire is the new, highly anticipated installment from the series. When Harry, now 14 years old, is unexpectedly chosen to participate in the TriWizard Tournament, he must find a way to overcome the dangerous tasks and unravel another twisted plot against him. I have not read the books, but from those who have, I've been told that Goblet of Fire lacks a lot of important elements that are going to infuriate the purists. As the stories have progressed, so has the quality of filmmaking - until Goblet of Fire. Where the story should've flowed smoothly, it is choppy and incoherent. Great plot lines are created, and then easily forgotten until brought up again two hours later. Strong emphasis is placed on things of little to no significance. The beautiful direction that Azkaban possessed is lost. (But what can you expect from the director of Mona Lisa Smile and Four Weddings and a Funeral?) The one aspect in which I think Goblet of Fire succeeds is in its tone. When the tone is light, the mood is happy and amusing. But when it is dark, the mood is very uncomfortable. Some scenes are very dark and disturbing, and are the reason the movie has a PG-13 rating. For those who know the story, you're expecting it. But for those who don't know it, you'll be shocked - especially with the amazing ending. Don't get me wrong - Goblet of Fire is a good movie, but not the best. For having gained so much momentum in the previous three films, I expected more from the latest adaptation, but didn't get it. The quality of filmmaking has digressed with the fourth movie. I just hope they put more thought into whom they choose to direct the fifth. Sign up now and have your choice of locations for the summer.
