You may be wondering what the GRE •; is, whether you need to take it and why. '< Students applying to Graduate School take the GRE :to supplement undergraduate records, grades and recommendations. The GRE measures critical thinking through analytical writing, verbal reasoning and quantitative reasoning. \ Graduate admission committees consider GRE scores :'as part of their admission decision process. If you are thinking of applying to Graduate School, chances are -you may have to take this test. ;. Currently the GRE is a Computer Adaptive Test approximately two and a half hours long. Scores are based ,'on how consistently harder questions are answered; scales range from 200 to 800, similar to the SAT. The GRE is taken on almost any date and the same questions are recycled through the test over and over again, enabling cheating. [ : > ^~' •; With the new format of the GRE cheating will no <^&t' ; $5fr wytw longer be'possible; there will be twenty-nine dates a year to take the test and each date will have a completely new test. It will become a linear test, rather than adaptive and will be longer, approximately four hours. Linear test questions are stationary and am the gamut from easy to hard, rather than changing based on previous answers. The test will also be changing in content, in an effort to gauge critical reasoning rather than memorization. There will be less vocabulary and more sentence equivalency in the verbal section. In math, it will more data interpretation rather than calculations. Scoring will change from the aforementioned scale an approximate scale of 120 to 170. Ben Baron, Vice President of Graduate Programs Kaplan Test Prep & Admissions says that these score changes will create difficulties for Admissions Counselors since it will make comparisons between old plicants and new harder. Students may reserve the Grad Prep Exam Center by visiting the website at www.uvsc.edu/csse/students/ gpc.html or stop by the office in BA 113 for more information. ,**wv -<-,.. Put them together and what have you got? You have a beneficial experience helping you to prepare for a job by observing it up close and personal; it is called a Job Shadow. Imagine a very condensed internship, usually lasting less than one day. This entails experience through observation and actual hands on application, including what the specific occupation really requires. Job Shadow is a try-before-you-buy opportunity, and is a useful experience to pursue before you buy the tuition for an occupation that you may not really want to do for the rest of your life. Recently, three students participated in a job shadow and their stories follow: Quinn Durrant, a third-year student at Utah Valley State. Durrant is involved in the Career Services and Student Employment office at UVSC, and he job shadowed with For Every Body. It was an opportunity to learn from professionals in graphic design. He is interested in art, but is not sure if he wants to pursue a career in that field. He plans to explore several career paths to find the perfect fit. Each graphic designer at For Every Body spent time one-on-one with Durrant, mentoring him and telling him about the details of their careers. He enjoyed learning how each one became interested in graphic design and the responsibilities they have at For Every Body. "I find it interesting that they can convert their thoughts into an amazing product," W Durrant said. Merissa Hicken is a UVSC student who has nearly completed her Associates degree. She completed a Job Shadow with Maaco, as she is interested in collision repair. -1 It is like sculpting a car where you use clay to fill in the dents on a damaged car." She said it was fun to see how to reshape a car. When I asked her to rate her Job Shadow on a scale of one to ten she said, "It is off the scale." She recommends that students should "be in an excited mood if doing a Job Shadow; ask lots of questions and get hands-on involvement if possible. A shadow provides you with a good chance to know whichfieldyou want to go into." Debbie Willes said in describing her Job Shadow experience, "I was able to Job Shadow this week with a dietitian at the UVRMC Diabetic center. It was a great experience to see first-hand what a dietitian in a diabetic clinic does. The experience of job shadowing gave me the opportunity to ask the dietitian what her likes and dislikes were about her job; it also let me know what my likes and dislikes were. I feel more excited than ever about the field of study that I am pursuing." A student can only win by participating in a Job Shadow, whether it helps the student decide on a major to pursue or a career to steer away from. Light a fire in her.
