MONDAY-OCTOBER 31 -2005 On Tuesday, Nov. 1, UVSC adjunct faculty member and novelist David G. Pace will be on campus in room LC 243 at 11:30 p.m. reading from his new novel, Where Empty Armor Comes to Rest. The novel, which won the novel category of the Utah Original Writing contest last year, is considered to be a piece of "New Mormon" literature, a term coined by Irreantum editor Laraine Wilkins. "My vision of the new Mormon literature is one of truthful allegiance to Mormon characters and situations, without using either one as a shallow front for promotional or critical commentary on the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints," Pace said. Where Empty Armor Comes to Rest is written in the style of a memoir, taking place during the 1970s and 80s in Utah and New York. After the reading, Pace will be available to answer questions about his book, as well as questions from those interested in writing their own Mormon literature and finding outlets and publication. "[Pace] will do a reading from his novel and then he will answer questions about the novel and its place in the New Mormon literature," said Dennis Potter, Mormon Studies Coordinator. Pace's reading is one of a number of events sponsored periodically by the Religious Studies program at UVSC. These include readings, as well as a large annual conference on Mormon studies in the spring. Next spring's conference relates to Mormonism and the Christian tradition. The conference is still being planned, but the keynote speakers will be Robert Millet, Professor of Religion and ex-Dean of Religious Education at BYU, as well as Richard L. Evans, Chair of Religious Understanding at BYU. 'There will be speakers from the Orthodox, Roman Catholic, Evangelical, and mainline Protestant traditions," Potter said. UVS also offers courses that relate to the study of Mormonism as a wide-spreading academic discourse, including Mormon Literature and Mormon Studies. There is also a Mormon Studies club growing on campus. Pace is one of many writers considered to be part of Mormon literature who have visited campus. In the past, UVSC has featured readings by short story writer Brian Evenson and poet Lisa Bickmore. Since his novel has garnered the award last year, Pace is hoping publishers will take note and take a chance publishing it as a piece of "New Mormon" literature. The reading is open to the general public and is sponsored by the Utah Arts Council and the Mormon Studies program at Utah Valley State. For more information on the Mormon Studies program, or to express interest in joining the Mormon Studies club, contact Dennis Potter at potterde@uvsc.edu To find out more about Pace and his writing, he can be reached at (801) 520-0277.
