Show life MONDAY* OCTOBER 10*2005 One Hale of a costume When it comes to playing dress up, nobody does it like the Hale Theater Kathryn Greenwell Life Writer Things I miss about UVSC O kay, so all the back to school frenzy is over. You have either settled comfortably into your classes or have fallen miserably behind. Outside the leaves are turning bright red and gold and you can smell a new, cool crispness in the autumn air. Now is the time for the most important decision you will make all semester. What are you going to be for Halloween? Although UVSC doesn't have a costume parade like they do in grade school, you • still want to look fabulous at whatever Halloween party, dance, rave, hoe-down or fiesta you attend to celebrate this spectacularly dark holiday. If you are serious about your Halloween costume and those predictable French maid outfits and sequined cowboy hats at Wai mart won't do, then you're in luck. The Hale Center Theater in Orem is home to one of the most prestigious costume shops in America, Archive Costume. This costume shop receives requests for costumes from all over Utah, back East, and as far away as England. Not only is the theatrical quality of the costumes remarkable but the quantity is astounding as well. by a recent graduate 1 Hazing the students who would wear BYU apparel on campus. Without the liberal bias to influence me I've turned into a fascist. 8 7 6 It was okay to not have a job when I was in school. Now people think I am lazy. Life is so much more difficult when you don't have a monolith to boost your spirits. The disheartening feeling of knowing that at least 90 percent of the people you meet will at least have some blonde hair. Julie Ann Ingram, Archive Manager, said, "I kind of lost count after numbering about four thousand costumes in stock." And each one is original. There are no duplicates so you can be sure no one else will show up wearing your same costume. The variety of costumes available to rent is fantastic. There is an abundance of medieval princesses, saloon girls, Egyptian pharaohs, Musketeers, southern belles, and pirates, just to name a few. . Archive Costume also has an excess of theatrical accessories for rent, such as swords, chain mail, fairy wings, hoop skirts, straight jackets, and the most dazzling assortment of hats. If you feel like being a particular character, try going as King Triton, Marc Antony, Aphrodite, or Cinderella. If you have a significant other, there are couple-oriented costumes available like Scarlett O'Hara and Rhett Butler, Tarzan and Jane, Trinity and Morpheus, King Arthur and Guinevere, and Popeye and Olive Oil. If your taste is a little more sophisticated, Archive Costume is home to the largest supply of vintage clothing around. You can find zoot suits, 50s gangster apparel and sleek, sexy dresses to make you look like you just stepped out of See COSTUMES. B2 Every Halloween The Hale Center Theater in Orem opens up its costume vaults and rents their one-ofkind costumes to the general public. If you haven't been to a corn maze yet this month, Hee i Haws Farm is the place to go. There is not only a haunted ' hayride and many barnyard activities, but the absence of recycled Napolean Dynamite paraphernalia is greatly appreciated. Granted, when I first entered the farm I felt like I was walking through a kids' playground. Many of the activities were "family friendly," possibly a little too family friendly at times. But upon closer examination, there are several activities that a college student like myself is apt to enjoy. Take for example the haunted hayride. I watched several couples pretending to be scared in order to latch onto each other...and why not? Isn't that what it's all about for them anyway? I figure if you bring the right people, a jacket and some gloves, you can make it as much fun as you want it to be.
