Show MONDAY* OCTOBER 10*2005 opinion/ A7 The untold story of Hurricane Katrina From HURRICANE. A6 that were readily available, and are now under water. Nagan did not issue mandatory evacuations, only voluntary, even when the storm was at New Orleans' back door Blanco refused Federal assistance to help evacuate people on the I-10 freeway. Nagan did not suspend inbound flights to Louis Armstrong New Orleans International Airport, as is a standard procedure during a state of emergency, to allow for only having outbound flights to help fleeing people. No, Nagan let them all come into town, so they could celebrate their drunken brawls in the French Quarter, coincidently just in time for the orgy of sin that is the Gay Pride parade there in the Quarter. Blanco and Nagan did not utilize National Guard, State Police, nothing. They just sat and waited, now saying that Katrina would just brush the edge of New Orleans. Well, it sure did brush it, and overall structural damage was minimal. But then, the levy broke, and the city flooded. Immediately the left wing nuts cried foul play against Bush, when in fact they should have turned the pointed finger to Nagan and Blanco. Blanco and Nagan had received hundreds of millions of dollars over the years to strengthen New OrleansJ levy system, yet they diverted funds to other projects and Blanco admitted, "at the time, it [the levy] was not a priority." The majority of displaced people acted in civil, obedient fashion, grateful for the shelters and food they were provided. New Orleans, however, was anything but. It was downright brutal. The "poor, innocent blacks" were screaming into the television screens that the food that was dropped was "not good enough," that they were being victimized and racially attacked by rescue personel who tried to rescue them, when in fact they were not being- rescued because the majority of rescue officials were being shot at by snipers, hoodlums, and gangsters. The New Orleans Police Department literally let thousands of convicted murderers, thugs, and gangsters go free into the streets when the jail flooded, and there was no where to put them. Then the looting followed. No one is saying that going into a store to take bottles of water and canned goods in a time of disaster is wrong. But why in the world do you need to go into a Wal-Mart, that wasn't that badly damaged, and not just loot the televisions, VCR's, DVD players, even computers (which begs the point where are you going put it with no house, and how are you going to power it with no electricity), but completely gut the inside of it? There are reports that minimally damaged stores from the hurricane are now destroyed beyond the point of no return, all thanks to the looters. The Louisiana Super Dome and Convention Center, places that sustained minor structural damage, will now most likely be torn down, because of what happened inside. Forget the vicious rapes and thefts that occurred by the same "poor, innocent blacks" that looted the Wai-Marts and Targets. There are no reasons those buildings should have been left the way they were. The stadium is designed to hold 25,000 people on average.
