Show opinion/ MONDAY*OCTOBER 3*2005 Last dance with Mary Jane Dear Editor, I found the "I want to smoke marijuana," opinion in your last paper hilarious. Mr. James begins his tirade whining that he wants to be able to smoke marijuana whenever he wants to without going far from home to find it and without police officers busting him for it. He then tries to close with an intelligent, sentimental comment about the evils of keeping illegal drugs from cancer patients, although this was obviously not a part of his original argument. In between he rambles on about Canada and the strange belief that marijuana grows in everyone's backyard naturally. The argument that everything that grows in nature is good for me and should be free and available to me is ludicrous. Does the marijuana-smoking moron honestly want marijuana legalized to the extent of cigarettes and other smoking paraphernalia? They too produce a pharmacological effect, but not to the extent of marijuana. Do they honestly want our police officers, professors, day-care operators, truck drivers, and everyone else in the professional community to be able to smoke marijuana freely? Do they want their doctpr to go out on their smoke break before they operate on them? I understand that alcohol is also freely available to purchase, and it also kills more people each year than firearms. Do we really need another mindaltering substance to get through life? In closing Mr. James, if marijuana is such a huge part of your life, please do move to Canada. That way their taxes can support you in your rehab efforts, not ours. (he good (he bad & (he the good —C. Bounous UVSC scams Dear Editor, I have sat back and watched UVSC scam the students long enough. I am sick of it and I must voice my concerns. I am sure whoever reads this will just laugh and hit delete, so UVSC wins again. Examples - UVSC passing the difficulties and the costs on to the students letter/ lo the editor (continued) Sexism goes both ways Dear Editor, Three lefts make a right, but two wrongs? The CAL Annual Leadership Conference at UVSC is advertising the following two breakout sessions: Reba Keele: Recognizing and Developing Your Leadership Skills (WOMEN ONLY); and Susan Madsen: Recognizing and Developing Your Leadership Skills (WOMEN ONLY). This is a clear case of sexual discrimination. Men are also interested in attending these sessions, even if, or especially if the comments are directed primarily at women. Labeling a speech (MEN ONLY) would certainly not be tolerated. Imagine the reaction you would get from women on campus and in the community if you hosted the following breakout session...John Wayne: Recognizing and Developing Your Leadership Skills (MEN ONLY). These discriminatory restrictions should not be tolerated. Some might say that women put up with it for centuries; it's payback time! Discriminating against women was wrong, and discriminating against men is just as wrong. Two wrongs make two wrongs, period. Why is it that when a woman smacks a man, he must be a jerk, but if a man smacks a woman, he is a jerk? When a female reporter forces her way into a mens' locker room, and someone asks her to leave, it's a violation of her first ammendment rights, but if a man wanders into a womens* locker room, he is arrested. Sexual discrimination against men is real, and enough is enough! A few weeks ago, I sent an email to UVSC Judicial Affairs, the department responsible for preventing discrimination on campus. They would not reply, so in the spirit of Rosa Parks. I invite all men who read this letter to attend these two sessions. In the interest of social progress, we cannot afford to take two steps forward and one step back. Let's support women's rights because those same rights belong to all of us. They have the right not to be banned from a leadership session because of their gender, and men share that same right. —John Carlson clci/zified/ help wanted Nannies Unlimited Great Jobs.
