In May, 1933, The New York Times reported the death of professor Li Chung Yun (also spelled Li Qingyun). He was 256 years old. According to records, the Chinese herbalist had been born in China in 1677, had survived 23 wives, and had lived to see 11 generations of descendants during his lifetime. He reportedly died with all of his natural hair and teeth and looked, according to witnesses, to be in his fifties at the time of his death. What was professor Li's secret? The oft-quoted phrase attributed to him is, "Sit like a turtle, walk like a pigeon, sleep like a dog." Professor Li lectured extensively on longevity, stressing light exercise, deep breathing, herbal supplements {ginseng, gotu kola) and a primarily vegetarian diet. Professor Li's exercise of choice was brisk walking, as it promotes full body movement and is light on the joints. Results lOK-a-day Since 2004, UVSCs Wellness Education Center has sponsored a lOK-a-day walking program, what they call a "simple and inspiring program to boost your physical activity every day, no matter how busy you are." The Wellness Center has tailored four individualized programs tofitstudents' needs: 1) Life Balance, 2) Pregnancy, 3) Osteoporosis and 4) Diabetes. According to the Wellness Center, most people walk an average of 3,000 steps per day, while active folks, according to the Center for Disease Control, should take at least 10,000 steps per day. After the first week, I found that I was not only able to walk faster, but I wanted to walk faster. I turned on my iPod and set out for school each day-a two-mile trek (which, oddly enough, actually is uphill both ways). After the first week. I was arriving at school in approximately 30 minutes. I can't tell you if that's fast or slow, but speed doesn't matter. The point of the program is that it's meant to be edged into slowly, as you are ready for it. As a side effect. I have begun to pay more attention to what I eat. I have naturally begun to cut out carbonated beverages in favor of water and pure juices. Last week I started a simple weight-training program-something I haven't done since high school. Just small and simple steps. But each step you take somehow encourages you to take 100 more. Steps become brisker, breathing becomes deeper. Overall health and physiological balance improves. I recommend taking an MP3 player with you. The Wolverine Mile Personal Experience Last year the Wellness Center unveiled its Wolverine Mile concept, a one-mile indoor path around campus with directional plaques posted along the way. According to the Wellness Center, walking the path each day will keep seven pounds off your body per year. Among other benefits, walking the mile also strengthens the heart, reduces chance of breast cancer in women and improves self-confidence. I signed up for this program about three weeks ago, determined to give it a shot. I'm proud to say I saw and felt results within the first week and have decided to adjust the program permanently into my daily routine. The Life Balance program "can help you regain your sense of evenness through simple daily activities: reading, walking and writing. Reading because it prompts thought, walking because it's good for your body, writing because it's good for your sense of self." To sign up for the lOK-a-day program, visit the UVSC Wellness Education center in SC 221. The program costs $20 and is worth every penny. You'll receive a packet of helpful fitness information, a log card to record your daily steps on. a pedometer, and a lOK-a-day t-shirt.
