At one point, commenting on UVSC's status downgrade from a state-funded to a state-assisted institution, Brad Cook joked that it was in some ways "slipping to more of a state-appreciated" institution. One suggestion responding to the growth of the area and market demand was made by former President Sorenson, GET who suggested that UVSC needs to "improve our close contact with industry-" General community involvement varied from absorbing information to nodding importantly to posing suggestions, After the meetings, community members were given the opportunity to meet with President Sederburg and the Board of Trustees to address concerns directly. Student Body President Jared Sumsion, the student representative on the Board of Trustees, touted the forums as largely successful. "It went extremely well," Sumsion said. "We asked for a dialogue and received a lot positive feedback." Asked on what UVSC would be trying to do for the immediate future, Sumsion said, "I think we need to focus on getting the good image out to the community; focus on the positive, good aspects of UVSC that the community sometimes doesn't hear about." Minutes were taken of each meeting, and the notes were promised to be given serious deliberation, The strategic directions are going to be distributed to all UVSC faculty members for the 2005-2006 school year. A more thorough report of them can also be made available through UVSC's website. Al LIFE! GET A HAIRCUT! And by 2 a.m. the next day they returned toward the lake with several specimens collected. Unanswered questions still surround this elusive plant. Harris hopes to learn more with a follow up trip next year. Harris is hoping to find if this plant grows elsewhere. He also plans to gather data held in the seeds regarding the number of chromosomes it contains. Harris thinks the plant may grow in other areas. "I suspect there are numerous populations in the immediate area, and I have a few ideas why it would grow there. The Kate Bathurst Peninsula, which they're found on, wasn't glaciated during the last ice age. For that reason I believe they were protected there." Another interesting mystery he hopes to understand is the plant's relation to the local caribou population. "I noticed it grew amongst the mat like vegetation, but only in spots that have been eaten and cleared by the caribou, meaning it could depend upon them to clear away the hardier ground cover." Given its rarity, the plant will likely be put on the endangered species list to preserve the few specimens that remain, Harris worries the extinction of the plant is not something we can protect it against. "Global warming may do the plant in, but not because of the warmth. Coastal erosion has been accelerated due to the increasingly powerful waves, and the bluffs sinking into the water is where they grow." With so many factors working against this plant, research will hopefully be able to figure out a way of preserving it or discovering other areas it can grow before they sink into the ocean and get lost, this time for good.
