He offered several examples, and related the story of a professor, who, "in a public setting, said the word Vagina three times, and was called on the carpet for it. His job was in the balance, and he was asked to make a formal apology." "Academic freedom," Pedersen continued, "is probably the most important part of education. And when we have faculty members who are scared to death to say certain words... that is wrong." Mary Lou Huffmon, President of the local chapter of' The League of Woman Voters was in the audience and said she respected the student leaders who brought recent controversial events to campus because it fostered dialogue. She cited specifically, Michael Moore and Sean Hannity, saying "I hope that nothing that was said today would stop the college from pursuing those kinds of interests because I think they are important." $14base-appt APPLY NOW, START AFTER FINALS: Provo: Salt Lake City: Ogden/Layton: 8O2-713O 263-67OO 525-9789 Immediate Openlngsl! Autumn Nielson Assistant News Editor Thousands of confused students are shaking their heads at the unexpected change of "OnAccess" UVSC's current online student services. For months now, OnAccess has been in the transformation stage to the new UV Banner software "that is developed specifically for higher education" and improves communication because it has a "common database that is shared by everyone who uses Banner" according to the banner website. Banner will now be used for student information systems such as admissions, financial aid, registration, and the student portal. As the current OnAccess website states the biggest part of this change for students "will be the phasing out of OnAccess over the next six months." What does this mean for students? For those leaving school until fall, it is important to understand the new system fully to ease any misunderstandings that could occur over the summer and for the next school year. Advertised around the school are posters encouraging students to "Link Up" or become acquainted with the new system. One of the most important features of the new website is that a student's ID number will no longer be their Social Security number. Instead each student will be given a new "UVID" that will take the place of his or her current student ID number. The training is called "Banner Life as a Student by a Student." The training will take place on Tues., Wed. and Thurs. from 12 to 1 p.m. in AD 014 for the next couple of weeks. Anyone interested will need to sign up at the Instant Info desk in the Administration Building. There is a limit of 20 attendees per day, and those who attend will be given a voucher for a lunch. If students don't have a chance to receive the training, a quick jump onto the website will provide enough training to navigate the new system and watch for the updates as they occur. As for now, OnAccess will be offering WebCT through summer of '05 and current student email until October of '05, while UV Link will provide Fall '05 registration, the new student email starting this May, and Financial Aid as well.
