If interested please contact me at 801-472-2233 By VANESSA PERKINS News Editor College students spend at least four years of their lives in classrooms, learning skills that are important to their future careers, but upon graduation, they are faced with the same question: What now? The Career Development Center, located in LC 409, is designed to provide students with opportunities to learn skills which will help them obtain good jobs once they leave UVU. "In the last few months we have been receiving more and more phone calls and e-mails from students who expressed their gratitude for our services," said Michael Snapp, Director of the Career Development Center. "Those services and assistance were the difference in them finding their first job/career, and in some cases their dream job." With the help of the CDC, there are students currently working or interning for Motor Trend magazine in California and Goldman Sachs in New York. Twice a year, the CDC holds both a Career and Internship fair located in the Grand Ballroom. Held September 27 and January 24 of the upcoming school year, the fairs consistently host 7585 employers which students can meet with to learn more about the organizations and network. Besides the fairs, the CDC offers many other valuable tools for obtaining a career. Services include: career counseling, help with elevator pitches and resumes, mock interviews, job and career search strategies and locating internships, among other things. Though students go to the CDC on their own accord, HOUSING If living in BYU Approved Standards is important to you come see our Fall Contracts In The Best BYU & UVU Student Condos! "That used to be at the bottom of the list, but we're glad to see it rising," Snapp said. "Some professors require their students to complete certain assignments in conjunction with our center." Snapp hopes that professor involvement will continue in the future. It would be great if each new freshman came to our office at least once so they know we're here, and so we can start to develop a career plan. -Michael Snapp "We really hope that professors will tell their students that the CDC is one of the most important connections between where they are now and the career they want," Snapp said. "We would like to make more presentations in classes as well." He also wanted students to be weary of waiting for the last minute to reach out to the CDC. Though they will not turn a student away, they cannot fully help those students visiting them just a few weeks before graduation. To prevent this situation, the CDC is improving their current career road map showing students the steps they should take each year of schooling to end up where they want to be. "It would be great if each new freshman came to our office at least once so they know we're here, and so we can start to develop a career plan." Snapp said. As part of their cause, they help students become more marketable to employers. They are working on an program called 100 by Degrees. The program is designed to help students have at least 100 professional relationships in the area where they want to work after graduation. Having those connections increases students' chances of obtaining a job in that area. Utilizing the UV Job Board, which contains job and internship opportunities, and doing an internship is something that both the CDC and Internship Services advocate strongly. "We can't promise you a career. I wish we had that much power to drive the economy," Snapp said, "but students who take career development seriously and implement some of the tools we provide will have a serious advantage over their peers who put it off until graduation, or worse yet, never come to the CDC." To make an appointment, create an account on the UV Job Board or to get more information, visit www.uvu. edu/cdc or call 801-8636364. "They saw dirt roads, potholes, it was raining, nothing painted, they saw the local market, post office, and overgrown bushes everywhere. All you can think of is bugs and spiders. I could see that they were thinking, 'Oh my gosh, this is how they live?"' As a custom, they visited the two chiefs upon arriving to Fiji, to be accepted into the village.
