Wolverines fell 15-3 last Tuesday to in-state rival Utah By Kira Terry Sports Editor Last week saw Utah Valley travel north the 38 miles up 1-15 March 29 to meet the University of Utah Utes at Spring Mobile Ballpark, ultimately falling 15-3 to the in-state rival. Spring Mobile Ballpark is the home of the Salt Lake Bees, but also hosts Ute baseball. The meeting with the Utes was the first of three times the Wolverines will face the in-state rival this season, twice in Salt Lake City and once at Brent Brown Ballpark. The loss brought Utah Valley to 6-14 on the season going into their three-game competition against Nevada last weekend. The Utes put themselves on the board first in the bottom of the second with four runs on three hits by sending 10 batters to the plate. The top of the third saw Utah Valley score their first and last points of the game off of four hits. The Wolverines only pounded two more hits the rest of the game with one each in the seventh and ninth innings. Utah kept their scoring alive tallying runs in all but the third and fifth innings with an impressive five runs in the bottom of the eighth. The Wolverines saw six pitchers go to the mound with junior Preston Olson pitching 2.1 innings and junior Craig Brimhall pitching two innings. Redshirt sophomores Willie Pratt, Cole McWhorter and junior Jason Zundel scored the Wolverines' three runs. "I think we had opportunities to eliminate some runs by getting outs and they are tough chances, but you have to be able to make them," said Coach Eric Madsen. "I felt like they took over the game — decided to get energy and we didn't. We didn't answer the challenge." The Wolverines will be back in action tomorrow as they face BYU on their diamond at 6:00 p.m. Utah Valley will then begin Great West Conference action as they head to Newark, New Jersey to face NJIT Apr. 8-10. Fans can see the Wolverines back on their home field Apr. 12 as the Utes come to town to face Utah Valley for the second out of three times this season. After a quick road trip to face conference opponent North Dakota Apr. 15-17 the Wolverines will return to home field for 10 straight games. This will be the longest stretch this season the Wolverines will play on home field. Against all odds SATURDAY APR. 9 Men's Golf at UK Bluegrass Invitational Lexington, Ky. Sports Editor Students living in the Orem/ Provo area who complain about parking issues on campus might want to consider running to school and avoid parking altogether. Think about it — most students either live close to campus or may even live by the neighboring university four miles down the road. Now, some would say four miles is a long way to run. Unless that someone is one of the mem- bers of the UVU distance track and field team. Junior Tim Rowberry and sophomore Josh McCabe might laugh at those who claim four miles is too far. In fact, they might go on to say that they could go from their apartment to class faster than most students in a car. McCabe ran the 5,000m (approx. 3.1 miles) in a time of 14 minutes, 24.71 seconds at the San Francisco State Distance Carnival in the San Francisco's Bay Area on March 25. That is under the aver- age amount of time it takes for a student to walk to their car in the morning and drive to campus. Now, that time doesn't even include parking, which on a good day may take five to 10 minutes. While looking for that parking spot, Rowberry just ran the mile. Twice. In UVU's first outdoor meet this season at UNLV, Rowberry ran the 1,500m (.932 miles) with a time of 3 minutes, 50.97 seconds. Just one week before that in the conclusion of the indoor season he ran the mile continued on B3 By Nate Gray Asst. Sports Editor It didn't take long for the Wolverines' new women's golf coach Sue Nyphus to get up to par and get the team up and swinging as well. Any time a team announces a new head coach it's only normal for fans to be concerned about how the team will react and develop. With this being Nyphus' first year coaching at UVU, she would face the same issues any new coach would. continued on B3 |
