A little over one year ago, President Holland arrived during the transitional phase between a state college and a fully developed university. Through strong leadership and with a constant eye on the mis^on set before him, Holland shaped a serious and engaged, yet inclusive, institution. He has built a strong university, even while wading through troubling economic times. 'The biggest challenge, which is a good challenge, is wrestling with the decision about what we are going to do with all the growth, as we are striving to be serious and become a better and better university. There's a companion challenge to that, which is the state of our re- sources. We came out much better than I thought we would, but it's a constant worry, how to get the necessary resources to be able to handle this many students," Holland said. Though institutions all over the state, including UVU, have faced massive budget cuts over the year, Holland has been able to do much with what he's got. One notable and significant accomplishment has been that of securing the funds to build a much-needed new science building. "What I love about it is that now, in addition to having the events center and the baseball diamond as the front face of campus, you also have the library and the science building that gives this wonderful academic feel to UVU "Holland said. One feat that may go unnoticed by many, despite its importance, is a change in policy when it comes to recruiting, hiring and training faculty. "Universities are, by and large, human organization assets. You've got to hire, train and promote the right people to live up to that mission and the work we've done on the policy lays a good foundation. It's one of those things that would be easy to miss. It's not as grand as a new science building, in terms of recognizing a contribution, but it will have more lasting ramifications for the kind of place that UVU becomes over the years in its effort to become a serious university," Holland said. Holland has gone to great lengths recently to attain some great new faculty members as a shuffle in his presidential cabinet. The needs of the university have required administrative changes to fill the vacancies and accommodate the growth of the university. The reshaping done this past year and during the recent months is being done to help facilitate the needs of the community and state, as well as to help build a stronger university as it moves forward and continues to grow. "We are poised with a stellar team that is aligned with our mission and a reasonable sense of responsibility that will really take us forward in the coming year," Holland said. Former Student Attacked By GLADIS HIGGINBOTHAM News Writer A former student was found raped and physically assaultedon Wednesday ,June9tharound5:40p.m.,inProvo. The young woman, who had recently begun attending a different institution, was walking to school on the Provo River trail directly behind the Branbury apartments. According to Officer Argyle,of the Provo Police Department, she left her apartment at around 3 pm, which means she laid out there nearly three hours before someone saw her. She did manage to crawl from the wooded area, where the attacker left her, to the sidewalk where two Brandbury residents saw her and called the police. Paramedics and the police were dispatched immediately. When the police arrived on the scene, the young woman was in very bad condition, according to Provo police. They found her with broken facial bones, a severe head injury and several missing teeth. Despite her condition, she was able to talk to the police. This is when Officer Argyle found out that she had not only been physically assaulted but sexually as well. She was then rushed to Utah Valley Regional Medical Center. "The attackerobviously thought she was deadorabout to die becauseheIeftherlyingthereandranaway,"saidofficerArgyle. The victim also told the police that she did not know the at- tacker; however, she was able to give a very good description of him.Thesuspectisa white male in his mid to late 20s with tattoos on his neck and arms wearing a baseball cap. Officer Argyle said that even though they haven't arrested anyone for this crime, they have one suspect in custody who was arrested in Mona,Utah on Friday at 4 a.m., and charged with the robbery assault of the store Trendy Tots in Provo. The individual is a 33 year old Caucasian Provo resident, Shawn Leonard, who fits the description the young woman gave the police of her attacker. "This is not one of those isolated trails where you would think something like this could happen," said officer Argyle. "However, it happened and we need to be aware that anything can happen anywhere if we are not aware of our surroundings." Officer Argyle suggests to everyone to remember, whenever walking, pay attention to where you are and what is going on around you, make eye contact, look confident and look like you know what is going on. "Sometimes people, especially students are too busy with their iPods and headphones that they hardly know what's going on around them," said officer Argyle. A2 A6 President Matthew Holland recently macle important executive personnel announcements regarding his new administration, specifically concerning the vice president of development and alumni and the interim vic*e> president for academic-affairs. Since 2006, Vaif riale has been the Advancement Vice President, workingrelosely with members of the community to raise funds for the university. Since the economy has taken a negative turn, private funds have been difficult to acquire. In turn, Holland's professional move was not just one little administrative change, but one of many decisions he believed were essential to make. "This position will lbe increasingly important because as state funding to UVU decreases, the need for private funding will rise," said Hale, who is currently working as the VP of development and alumni. "Many of the new projects that will be coming on line in the future will require a great deal of private funding in order to make them happen." On May 19 and 20, an open forum was held for three finalists: David Driggs, Marc Archambault, and Kent Haslam. On June 3, President Holland officially appointed Marc Archambault as the new vice president of development and alumni.
