The real world is far from a perfect picture," said Kopp. "I want the students to know the physics, and electrical engineering behind every sound system they may set up." The class expects to have a good turn-out, and an audience full of their peers. "It's going to be a great sounding and fun concert," said Wing. ANDREA UNDGREN Asst. Culture editor Our university has grown considerably over the past several decades. It has gone from vocational school, to community college, to state college to the growing university it is today. Over the course of those years of transformation, various programs have been added and enhanced along the way. One particular program that doesn't seem to get enough recognition is the Illustration program. However, it is obvious from the recent art show that this program is one we should be talking about. A current exhibit titled "Ex Libris" is the culmination of senior BFA student Rebecca Stuhff s UVU career. She is a prime example of talent and creativity within the Illustration department. This and other Illustration exhibits can be seen on the fifth floor of the library from April 2-13. Stuhff (pronounced stuff), who since childhood had been inspired by Disney, developed a love for drawing from an early age. "Rebecca has been an artist since she was real little, but she honed her skills here at UVU; she just really blossomed," said Denis Stuhff, Rebecca's father. Stuhff transfered from SLCC, and described how coming to a university changed the game for her and truly shaped her bright future. "The Illustration department is so underrated here, it is way more [impressive] than people realize. I didn't expect it to be so good. I can see the tremendous difference this school has made in me. The atmosphere and environment here pushes you to be better," she said. One phenomenal piece created by Stuhff depicted Neptune's daughter. The piece that began with acrylics, was finished in oil. This beautiful piece displays exceptional detail and vivid use of color. Though both this piece and exhibit represent the artistic sophistication she has achieved, Stuhff also described how when she first arrived at the UVU Illustration department she had not been properly prepared for the rigor of the program. "Something as simple as keeping a sketchbook was something I had not been taught until I came here, I didn't even know how to do oil or acrylic paints when I first arrived. The classes were intense and the teachers push you, but when youfinishyou can really see the improvement," Stuhff said. It was also Stuhff s positive attitude and drive that contributed to her success. "She's a real selfstarter, she would stay up late at night and perfect her craft," her father said. Stuhff says her inspiration has been Disney and Art Nouveau. She also describes how UVU brought a love of art history into her life and into her craft: "1 learned about the old masters, and picked the ones I liked, and tried to draw inspiration from them. I was really taken by some of the artists like Degas and Klimt." Stuhff s work displays charming characters in various settings; each piece invites you into a magical world occupied by characters from Hansel and Gretel, sweet green snakes and pretty-in-pink little girls. tl I try to push myself to be creative and experiment. I love to experiment and try new things," Stuhff said. At the opening event of the exhibit, Stuhff had prints and buttons that could be purchased. Some of Stuhff s work can be seen on her blog, IllustrationFun .blogspot .com. Come check out Stuhff s creative work, as well as other illustration student's pieces, at the UVU library; perhaps you, like Stuhff, may find that UVU's exceptional Illustration program may be the curriculum for you.
