Show Culture Monday SCERA Honky and tonk are both here to stay •ANNALICIA SCHWAB Culture writer Give your ears a break from all of the lectures and professors this summer, and skedaddle on over to the Avalon on June 13 to see Ben Kweller live in concert. Not yet had the pleasure of hearing Kweller* s music? Download some songs from his new album. Changing Horses, and prepare to meet your new favorite summer artist. Changing Horses is Kweller's fourth album to date, but his first to fall under the country music genre. *And whether or not the words "country" and "music" in the same breath are an instant turn-off, keep reading. His country is nothing like the drawled my-doggot-ran-over, wife-is-an-alcoholic-type of country that keeps performers like Toby Keith on the charts. His is a playful, genre-bending sound - a charming voice, genuinely moving lyrics, several saloonesque piano melodies and a little twang for good measure. This is country music through the lens of Kweller. Although Kweller's pre- vious albums sounded more like indie rock ballads and anti-folk melodies, this Texas-bred musician acknowledges, "Country music was the soundtrack to my life. It's still a big part of who I am. When Garth Brooks or Alan Jackson Amazon.com [sic] come on the radio, somethin' happens inside." Before running off to his concert on June 13, preview a few of his latest songs for free on his Myspace page, myspace.com/benkweller. from • A4 The song "Sawdust Man" is sure to induce the busting of a few fledgling country-hued dance moves as you imagine how thrilling it would be to hear it live in concert. major Adam Meyers. Drag Me to Hell is the newest release from acclaimed director Sam Raimi, famed for such cult classics as the Evil Dead series and Spidennan. Many of the elements from Raimi's previous films are present, including slapstick gore and humorous yet scary sequences. The movie is about Christine Brown (played by Alison Lohman), a loan officer with a promising future. One day, in order to show her boss she has what it takes to earn a promotion,"Christine denies an elderly gypsy woman a third extension on a loan. The elderly woman then gets on her knees, begging for Christine's help. As a crowd of people gather, Christine shoves the elderly woman away, thereby shaming her in public. Because of this, the elderly woman rips a button off of Christine's coat, curses it, and gives it MIXTAPE from • A4 classifieds I misc Danceworks The Dancer's Store - Sansha's Soft Ballet Shoes $18 Freed Point Shoes $79 Supa Dance and Freed Ballroom Shoes Much More 10% Student Discount 3228 North University Avenue Provo - 375-4622 FAMILIES FREE BLUESJAM FIRST THURSDAY .OF EVERY MONTH! Pissing off a gypsy and getting cursed, while not bad for a plot, certainly does not reek of originality. It's clear that Raimi made this movie score big in other ways (just like all his other films). This usually means shocking the audience with freaky overthe-top action sequences. Overall, Drag Me to Hell is very entertaining. Suffice it to say that few can combine the comedy and horror genres as well as Raimi can, and this movie further proves that.
