Show A4 Culture Monday ' June 8, 2009 New this week CD tertainment and to bring together the music community. "Most of us have to perform in bars or restaurants because we can't find anywhere else to perform," Barrowes stated. "With a weekly concert series I wanted to provide artists with another great performance opportunity." If the first performance of the season was any indication, this is a gift to music fans worth far more than the $5.00 the tickets cost. With a laid back feel, the concert series is the perfect setting for a night out with the girls, an inexpensive but memorable date, or a gathering place for music-loving families. Il seems that Shaun has a knack for putting together a group that meshes well together, but also displays a variety of musical abilities. The premiere event included guest performers Justin Williams, Janet Burns and Debra Fotheringham. Each artist took a turn playing one song at a time, a format that engaged the audience. The range of sounds traveled from sweet to sexy through fun and feisty. Philbrick The Beast (played by Adam Meyers) watches as Belle (Emily Smith) and Maurice (Jim Murphy) wander the forest. Disney's classic Beauty and The Beast, which was adapted into a live musical in 1994, opened last weekend at the SCERA Shell, beginning Utah Valley's outdoor theater season. UVU's own Emily Smith will star as Belle, returning to SCERA after playing another Disney princess - Cinderella - several years ago. Director Jerry Elison saw almost 200 auditions for the show, and expanded the ensemble to 66 members to accommodate the extra talent. "This is an enchanting, lovely show," Elison said. 'it has everything the movie did and more. It won Academy Awards for music, and the play has a few new classics as well. It is also visually sumptuous, with spectacular and creative costuming." Elison, a beloved and prolific local director, has been producing plays and musicals in Utah for 50 years. The plot of the live musical is the same as Disney's original movie. Belle, the bookish heroine, meets the transmogrified ex-prince known to terrified locals as the Beast. Belle's initial horror evolves to annoyance , acceptance, patience and eventually love. Belle's love saves the Beast not only from death, but also from his gruesome exterior and discontented soul.
