Show Monday * June 30, 2008 Mng Headlines ...i UVSC becomes UVU RgAL Cinderella Bulldogs In a monumental run the Fresno State Bulldogs pulled off the impossible by winning the College World as a fourth seed, and became the highest seeded team to win a championship in any sport. A four seed in the College World series would be comparable to a 15th or 16th seeded team winning the NCAA basketball tournament. After dropping the first game in the final against Georgia, Fresno State rallied to beat the Bulldogs from the SEC 19-10 after trailing early. They rode that momentum into the final game and came away with a 6-1 win to clinch the national title. Marcus Moore signs deal with Baltimore Orioles Former Utah Valley pitcher Marcus Moore signed a deal on Thursday with the Baltimore Orioles and will begin his professional career in Sarasota, Florida as a member of the Gulf Coast League Orioles. Moore, who finished with a school record 10 wins, a 2.86 ERA and 97 strikeouts, threw six complete games including two shutouts. He capped his career with a three-hit shutout at HawaTi on May 17th. "It caught me off guard. I wasn't expecting it,1' said Moore. "It's good to be chasing the dream. I*m excited to get out there and get to it." The Gulf Coast League is a rookie league based in Florida with 16 Major League affiliates. Another former Utah Valley pitcher, Kam Mickolio, is also with the Baltimore Orioles. Mickolio is pitching at the double-A level in Bowie, Maryland and currently 2-1 with a 4.41 ERA in 25 appearances. July 12-14 Billings at Orem 7:05 As is apparent the UVU name change is popping up all over campus. One of the latest changes is to the Scoreboard at Brent Brown Ballpark. As UVSC undergoes its proverbial name change and becomes UVU, students and fans alike are curious to find out what this will mean on the field, court, pitch and track. While the uniforms will be fresh out of the box with "UVU" emblazoned across each chest, and with the new logos adorning the athlete's warm-ups, the question remains if the product on display will be just as fresh? First as a junior college and then in its first years of Division I infancy, Utah Valley has left its mark in athletics. Numerous championships at the JUCO level as well as landmark wins over nationally ranked teams have set expectations high as UVSC prepares for its next step in collegiate evo- lution: becoming a university. "In my heart I believe university brings with it a sense of established respect," said UVU softball coach Todd Fairbourne. "It's almost an automatic respect and it sounds better too." While the impact on the field or court may take a few years to display itself, there are advantages to becoming a university. As far as recruiting is concerned, being UVU as opposed to UVSC will raise awareness to athletes who aren't familiar with, or from, the state of Utah. And those who see UVSC as BYU's little sister school may experience a sleight paradigm sift. There is also the scheduling aspect that may be improved as Utah Valley continues to grow and improve exponentially in the eyes of others. Playing and beating another university can be more impressive than beating a college. However, schools such as Arizona State, Oklahoma State, University of Washington, BYU, Utah and Oregon State have found out the hard way that UVU is no cupcake. While becoming a university may help scheduling, Utah Valley may have scared some schools off for fear of being handled by a small- er, lesser-known school. While university status will help the athletic department in many ways, the next big step will be getting into a conference. Automatically having a full schedule and opportunities to compete in post season tournaments are some of the advantages of being in a conference. Whether UV.U will be accepted into a conference is yet to be seen, but sooner or later, it will be necessary for UVU to take the next step in building an even more respected athletic program. The public recognizes most universities because of the success of their respective athletic programs: mention the University of Oklahoma and most people think of a great football program, while Duke and North Carolina are primarily known as great basketball schools. Whether it's right or wrong the publicity and respect UVU will gain will undoubtedly be reflected by the success of the athletic department. "I'm excited to see what the future holds," said UVU basketball coach Dick Hunsaker, "but our philosophy and our approach will remain the same. We'll always be the best we can possibly be." The Owlz, which are now sitting on the best overall record, kicked off the series with two games in Orem, two in Ogden and then ended up back in Orem for the remaining two. Although the Raptors scored first in 5 of the 6 games, they couldn't quite pull off a "W," and such was the case on Sunday. Owlz pitcher Jose Perez came out pretty hot, and not just due to the heat outside. In the top of the first, Perez laid two strikeouts down with what seemed to be little effort. But it was heavy Raptor hitter Kyle Russell who quickly turned heads and had the crowd biting their nails. The .389-average hitter cracked one down the left side of the field to get on base, which got the game rolling. That was only a taste before Kyle Orr stepped up to the plate and brought Russell home with a home run over the right field fence. Ogden kept a 2-0 lead, ending the top of the first. The Owlz wasted no time answering back. In fact, the first hitter, Contreras, drilled one down the left field line for a base hit and was only complimented by his teammates thereafter. Perez fired one into center field to bring Contreras home. Righter Angel Castillo caught a lucky break when his infieid hit was overthrown at first base. Perhaps the quick swing back to Orem's favor came from some simple mistakes made by Ogden's third baseman Pedro Beaz. Owlz first baseman Gabe Jacobo hit a common grounder to Beaz, who missed and let the ball roll to a stop in right field, bringing Castillo home to tie up the game 2-2. It wouldn*t have been so bad, but Beaz had the crowd shaking their heads again in the next inning when Owlz batter Jon Plefka hit another grounder right toward him, which again became the responsibility of Mark Johmton / UVU Review The Orem Owlz are off to an impressive start after beginning the season 6-0. The Owlz ore looking to repeat as Pioneer League Champions. the right fielder. From thereon out,1 the crowd sat back in their chairs relaxed, awaiting another win for the Owlz. It was a solid game and proved to Orem that winning every inning is essential. The Orem Owlz move on to play the Idaho Falls Chukars July 1-6 in another 6 game series. July 3 is the Hootz Independence Celebration and will include fireworks after the game. |
