The two months Woods took off to recover from knee surgery left him limping at limes, but his golf game hadn't missed a beat as he finally got the win after 91 holes of golf. After finishing tied at the end of the first playoff. Woods found the bottom of the cup in the sudden death playoff to win the 14th major of his career. Larry H. Miller hospitalized Real Salt Lake, perennial bottom dwellers of the MLS, felt the winds of change blowing in their direction, but the momentum boost they had hoped for ended in a disappointing scoreless draw with the Kansas City Wizards. Sitting in the fifth spot in the west division with ] 1 points. Real was looking to jump right back into the thick of the conference race with five of their next seven games at RiceEccles Stadium. Going into Saturday's game. Real Salt Lake trailed Western Conference-leading Colorado by just four points. A win would have catapulted Real into second place with a favorable schedule ahead. Instead, Real was awarded one point for a tie and remains in sixth place in the West. After fending off Kansas City's early aggression, Real settled in to control possession throughout the first half. Several opportunities for midfielder Kyle Beckerman and forward Kenny Deuchar to put the bail in the net were stifled by the Wizard's goalkeeper, Kevin Hartman. The second half left a sour taste in the mouths of Real fans, as Salt Lake was once again unable to punch one in. "There are a lot of positive things to take out of that game," said Real coach Jason Kries. "The only thing you can shake your head about or scratch your head about is the final touch, because if that was there I think we would've had quite a few goals tonight." In the 62nd minute, forward Robbie Findley's shot was errant, and in the 71st minute his header in the box sailed over the top of the crossbar. RSL out shot Kansas City on the night 19-7, but couldn't find the back of the net. "We did everything right except for put the ball away," Beckerman said. 'The effort and the way we played were good, and if we continue like that we'll be all right." I The Wizards applied pressure late, but a (living deflection in stoppage time by RSL goalkeeper Nick Rimando preserved the scoreless draw. The process of adding both programs is expected to take a total of three years with the men's program set to begin competition in the fall of the 2009-10 season and the women's program slated to start competing in the fall of the 2010-11 season. "The addition of tennis to our athletics department is important for our progress as a Division I institution," Utah Valley Director of Athletics, Mike Jacobsen said. "We're excited to be able to offer more student-athletes an opportunity to compete and get a quality education here at UVU." After making the playoffs in each of its first two years, the Blaze were in danger of missing the.post season for the first time in team history. Six weeks and four wins later, the Blaze were right back in the playoff hunt needing a win against the L. A. Avengers to keep their playoff hopes alive. Luckily for the Blaze, the Arena Football gods were smiling down on Danny White's team as they escaped with a 65-56 win. "This win is a tribute to the resiliency of this team in the second half of the season," Blaze coach Danny White said. "This game is a perfect example of a bunch of guys taking ownership of this team who refuse to give up." With six minutes to go in the fourth quarter, the Utah Blaze held a 51-50 lead after quarterback Joe Germaine found Huey Whittacker in the end zone for the go-ahead-score. Needing a stop, Utah forced the Avengers on the following possession to a fourth and seven. On what looked to be a touchdown reception for the Avengers, Utah de- fensive back Damon Mason recovered a fumble in the end zone and returned it 22 yards to give the Blaze field possession with less than three minutes on the clock. After an incomplete pass Germaine found receiver JJ McKelvey down the field for a touchdown, which all but salted the game for the Blaze. An insurance interception by defensive back Eddie Canonico was overturned by a penalty, but Canonico darted around the field as precious seconds ticked off the clock for the Avengers. The resurrection of the season came after Utah got its first win of the season on May 3, against the Kansas City Brigade. Since then the Blaze have won four of five and are now poised and ready to head into the post season. Utah Valley seniors Marcus Moore and Scott Croshaw were both named to the Division I AllIndependent Baseball First Team on Tuesday.
