Probably many studentsinthehallshavebeen approached by an alarm company manager, who promised them thousands and thousands of dollars for a good summer's work. Alarm sales seem to be the trend lately and the incentives and promises given' by managers are almost too good to be true. But is it all it's cracked out to be, summer sales? If you have been approached by a smooth-talking manager from some high-profile alarm company, and he told you that in one summer's work you will make at least $30,000, it might actually happen. But keep in mind that they will all tell you what you want to hear. Believe me. Managers tell you success-stories of sales reps that started out slow and ended with a bang-trying to tell you that it will all work out. Like any salesman, they will tell you about the greatest success stories and conveniently leave out the horror stories, spending all their time persuading you to go while forgetting to explain all the twists and turns of how the pay- " Some see it as shady • those in the industry call it 'the art of persuasion'" Rihanna has more talent The T-shirt, jeans and flipflops 24/7,365 is getting o l d ..,!:,,•',:;:. For some, things truly do work out and they make a good amount, and don't have to work until that next summer when they bank on another productive season of sales. But what isn't mentioned, or is mentioned in brief, is the grind of knocking on doors all summer everyday, all day. You will be dropped off in your designated neighborhood and picked up 7 or 8 hours later, simple as that. You stay in that neighborhood for sometimes days at a time, or until you have talked to everybody at every door and have tried to per- suade that resident that they need an alarm system. You'll be given a sales manual that lists detailed responses to every excuse that a customer could ever think. Some see it as shady-those in the alarm industry call it "the art of persuasion." Most people that are approached say no from the start, but others show a bit of interest. Those that show some interest but are undecided usually are offered incentives from a manager that wants more guys to come to his office. From lucrative items like laptops, or just money, sometimes thousands of dollars just to get them to commit to going and staying all summer. Why? Well, one thing that a manager won't tell you is that he makes money off of how you perform. Knowing this can only make you question these slick-talking managers' motives.
