Show Monday, June 4,2007 Hickman and Pyles'summer of sequels assessment Find out what blockbusters to avoid like the "Rage Virus" Hickman's Reviews Pyles' Reviews SPIDER-MAN 3 Despite what everyone in the world thinks, I dug this third installment. The reason most don't like it as much as the second is the reason I like it so much: Instead of being filled with non-stop, mindless action, this one has a strong story, a moral and a theme that's seen through until the end. I can forgive the plot holes and weaknesses for that. SPIDER-MAN 3 While watching SPIDERMAN 3, we get the sinking feeling that the overboard, "jokey," elbow-nudging comedy is the fruit of slaphappy, apathetic filmmakers. Sure, the action is good (albeit a little "cartoonish"), but even the lengthy 140minute runtime cannot sufficiently accommodate its many characters' storylines. Wait and rent the DVD. 28 WEEKS^ LATER For the first time, a horrorflickhas a worthy sequel. Just like 28 DATS LATER, WEEKS has a frighteningly real (and surreal) tone that honestly leaves you asking yourself, 'What would I do if the infection ever broke out?' And this time, you get to see the terror created by the spreading infection. 28 WEEKS LATER This sequel is just as good, if not better, than its predecessor. The genius masterstroke of these zombie movies is that they're each a horror movie within a horror movie, much like HOSTAGE (2005) is a hostage movie within a hostage movie. Beware: 28 WEEKS LATER can be nauseating. SHREK THE THIRD I strongly disliked the first SHREK SHREK 2 was pure genius, with smart adult humor infused with child fairytale and added several characters that brought bigger laughs. But SHREK THE THIRD sucked. It wasn't witty. It wasn't even funny. It never capitalized on what made SHREK 2 so good. This one really does feel like a kid's movie. . SHREK THE THIRD OK, I'd say the popculture-reveling, fairy-taleabusing ogre has just about lost his novelty. SHREK THE THIRD has some genuinely funny moments, but it isn't quite as magical. I haven't been this sick of a big, green guy since my mom force-fed me the Jolly Green Giant's green beans. PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN: AT WORLD'S END I'd rather walk the plank than sit through this movie again. Although it's a little better than DEAD MAN'S CHEST, I'd give 50 bucks to anybody who could tell me what AT WORLD'S END is about. The first PIRATES is a treasure; these last two sequels have been fool's gold. PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN: AT WORLD'S END PIRATES 3 should've been called ATWIT'S END, because that's exactly where it took me. Up in the ranks of X-MEN3, AT WORLD'S END will be known for ruining a potentially great trilogy. Why? Because everyone becomes a pirate captain, the hour-long climax involves hundreds of battleready ships that never even see battle and the most genuine character has the worst fate. Director Gore Verbinski, Jerry Bruckheimer and everyone at Disney will be damned to Davy Jones' Locker for this atrocity. Pholo Credit: Amazon.com What are those ponds used for? Wakesplorations brings new exhibition to ponds near you ByRayCheatftam LIFE WRITER Over the years, thousands of students have walked the hall of flags, looked west toward the ponds and wondered, "What are those ponds used for?" This spring, the UVSC Board Club and a number of sponsors provided an exciting answer to this question. On April 20 and 21, the irrigation ponds west of the main campus were transformed into a water playground for Wakesploration, an event that featured wakeboarding rail jams, great music and plenty of energy drinks. Another big part of the event was the outdoor showing of two wakeboard- ing films in the quad west of theSorensonStudentCenter. Wakeboarding is like snowboarding, except that it takes place in water. The wakeboarder secures his feet to a thin fiberglass board that looks somewhat like a fat snowboard. He or she is then towed behind a boat like a water skier. Tricks are usually performed on the wakes formed by the moving boat. At Wakesploration, the boats remained high and dry on the grass surrounding the ponds. In their place, powerful winches pulled wakeboarders across the ponds. Tricks were performed on rails elevated up to four feet above the water and on a ramp (called a "box") placed between the two ponds. Wakeboarders In Theaters Ocean's 13 performed incredible tricks that excited spectators and left them asking why events like this didn't take place at the ponds more often. Wakeboarding is gaining popularity in the world of extreme sports. Based on what was demonstrated at Wakesploration, it is understandable why. In fact, wakeboarding has become popular enough in Utah that developer Brandt Andersen has announced plans to build a wakeboarding lake in Lehi that will be at the center of a massive development designed by architect genius Frank Gehry. Wakesploration was a great distraction from studying for spring semester finals. Let's hope that the UVSC Board Club and their spon- sors bring Wakesploration to the ponds again soon, Come fall semester there will be plenty of new students walking down the hall Hostel Part H Fantastic 4 TOP 10 Top ten things to do jo Utah Valley over •;& summer 10.
