Show life B2 TUESDAY • JANUARY 16 -2007 Heather's Cookbook Taking down the pink skirts Michael McBride Ufe Writer Bad news: We're all back here for another semester. The good news: I'm back, so at least you can have one or two minutes a week that don't suck. I know it's late and all, but for this week I just had to review the game called RED STEEL from Ubisoft. I've had a great time playing this game and, honestly, have enjoyed playing this game more than I did when I played HALO 2. In this game, you're playing a silent, faceless protagonist referred to simply as "Scott." You are in Los Angeles with his flance'e, whose father is a Yakuza leader. The fiance'e is kidnapped and taken to Japan, where you must kill all who get in your way. First of all, the graphics weren't as good as they could have been, but they're still good. Movie scenes in this game are done using moving pictures. Though they're nice, the normal way is better. For the gunfights, they used a nice blend of techno-Japanese action music. Your enemies run, hide, come right at you and even surrender. You get to use up to 12 different guns and a katana with a short sword to fight your enemies. While sword fighting, you can use several different motions to attack and the short sword's thrust to block. When an enemy drops his sword or put his hands up, it means they surrender. You can decide whether they live or die. Like just about every other game, you'll find armor to up your defense, earn new guns and learn new sword techniques. In the multiplayer mode, up to four can play from all the different types of enemies you fight against, in four different arenas. The sad thing is that the graphics in the multtplayer mode aren't as good as they are in the game. When it Ingredients for crust: good, 1/2 cup white sugar 1/2 cup brown sugar 25 Ritz crackers 4 egg whites comes to what Jake on the Yakuza on their own turf in makes this Red Steel. game Aunt Petie's Cherry Torte Submitted by Jason Pyles To make crust: Beat egg whites. Add sugars and beat further. Next add crushed crackers and walnuts. Spread evenly in a 9"xl3" glass dish. Bake 1/2 hour at 325 degrees. Let cool for 30 minutes. Photocredlt/www.redsteelgame. us. ubi.com it's the motion control of the gun (which you can hold any way you want). The thing that sucks about the game is the motion control. It just isn't as finely tuned as it should be. The gun is prone to have an annoying twitching in certain areas, but it doesn't ruin the game. In conclusion, I hope you all give RED STEEL, the first game of its kind. the chance it deserves. No other game will give you the experience of shooting grown Japanese men in pink skirts. This is a game you should get just because it is still a lot of fun, despite the twitching flaw. If you have any problems with the motion control, well, then you're just not trying hard enough. A waiter's perspective What's another few dollars? Erik Frederickson Ingredients for filling: Ingredients for filling: 1 cup powdered sugar 2 Tablespoons milk 1 large Philadelphia Cream Cheese (softened) 1 large Cool Whip 1 can cherry pie filling To make filling: Beat powdered sugar, milk and softened cream cheese. Spread filling over the crust. Evenly sprinkle 1 Tablespoon white sugar on top of the filling. Evenly spread 1 large Cool Whip on top of the sugar. Spoon out cherries and place about 1 inch apart across the top of the torte. Ready to serve. Keep refrigerated. Note: Graham cracker crust is an option for those who dislike walnuts. If you have a good recipe, The College Times would be happy to print it. If it was in Utah County, there is a very good chance your server is just another poor college student - perhaps like yourself. Serving tables is a great job for college students. Waiters can work nights so they can go to school during the day. Sounds like the perfect job, right? Wrong. Serving tables can be a nightmare at times. It is physically and mentally draining. For instance: the next time your drink is empty for one minute, know that your server may be focusing on getting another table's food out, while another table is waiting to pay. And he or she may have also just had a large party sat in his or her section. When your server isn't right on top of things, maybe he or she has three of four other tables. Or maybe the soda machine ran out of syrup, so he or she had to go to the back and replace it. Or maybe he or she got caught up helping another server for a moment. Or maybe he or she is just having a bad night. Or maybe he or she is new and just a step behind. The list could go on for pages and pages. So, say we do tip well and are polite, if after we eat, we just sit at that table for a half hour chatting and hanging out, we are costing that server money. Jason Pyles Photocredit/www.diwww.epfl.ch or she could have had one or two more groups sitting at those tables and made that more money. If you were to ask waiters who their favorite type of people to serve are, the majority of them would say other servers. Why? Because other servers understand how tough a job it can be and that if something goes wrong it is not necessarily the servers fault. It is completely understandable being on a budget and having to be frugal with your money, but servers in Utah make $2.13 an hour. Yes, that is right only $2.13 an hour! Does this sound like the land of opportunity to you? Serv- ers depend on tips; it is the only money they get. The majority of server's paychecks read zero dollars after taxes are taken out. Restaurant etiquette asks that we tip our servers. So, if we don't have money to tip our servers what they deserve, Burger King, Taco Bell, and Wendy's are all open late. The sad thing about Utah Valley is that it's not all college students being so blatantly cheap (though it is a decent percentage), but the large families and needy groups of associates and friends. Honestly, what is a couple more dollars - especially if the meal is being bought with a company card! To a server it's everything. If they receive a good, or even just a fair, tip they go to the next table with a genuine smile. How hard is it to be polite and understanding, then tip your server 15 percent for decent service or 20% for good service? It really is the difference of a few dollars, at most. Outside of Utah, tipping 15 to 20 percent is common practice; it should be no different here. A hard working college student paying their way through college by pleasing us, as costumers, deserves it. When you are out enjoying some time away from all the stress, they are stressing out on making your downtime enjoyable.
