'The more I've been away from the experience, the more Tin like, wow." van Vuuren, who shot a 5under 66 in the South Qualifier at Hobble Creek over a month ago to get to the State Amateur, has been UVSC's most consistent golfer since arriving two years ago. "Nic is the complete package," said UVSC golf coach Tommy Johnson. I've got a whole roster full of talented, class-act kids, but Nic sets the bar." The State Amateur was won by Michael McRae, an 18-year-old from Salt Lake City who defeated Jon Morgan 6 and 5 to capture the crown. Morgan, who lost his 2nd State Am final in four years, actually came away with the biggest highlight, recording the first hole-inone in the tournament's history by acing the eighth hole with a 6-iron. A much better final in most people's minds than last year, where many still recall the highly debated controversy of BYU alumni Todd Miller, who made it to the Sunday final but refused to compete citing religious beliefs. van Vuuren, though he came up a bit short this time, will never forget the experience. "They (Utah Golf Association) were very friendly and organized over there, and it made it that much easier for me to be relaxed and play my game." A game that will look to improve even further as he soon once again finds himself swinging the clubs for UVSC.
