He is a Russ McKell country bumpkin in a city of slick moneymakers. In order to find assistance he goes to someone who left the village years ago for the city, the son of one of the village elders. Unfortunately we find that the city has ruined him and he has become as low and dirty as the city itself. Ong Bok is not deep or thought provoking. It doesn't clatter with morals or deep thinking. What it does do is shatter any conceptions you have about the artistry and athleticism of martial arts. It changes the way you look at the genre. Along the way, it weaves a simple story of duty, honor, courage and tradition. The movie isn't about Ting, but George, the one who has wandered into the city life. His change is what makes the movie all the better. Ong Bok will blow your mind. It is simple and beautiful. It is funny and suprising. It will make you laugh and gasp. And it can only be seen at the Broadway in Salt Lake City. It is worth your time, your money and your effort. Run, don't walk, to see Ong Bok, one of the best movies this year! Furthermore, it is one of Bergman's most acclaimed works. The film follows the journey of a knight who has just returned from the Crusades to his plague-ravaged home, only to find Death waiting for him. The knight is able to buy some time by challenging Death to a game of chess, and "The Seventh Seal" follows his last desperation during this time to find meaning in life, death, and the existence or non-existence of God. Produced nearly forty years ago, the film is black and white and features luring cinematography by Gunnar Fischer. The greatest strength of the film, though (at least from my perspective), is the piercing writing. To showcase this, quotations would probably be the most telling. Some idea of the conversations in this film (even if out-of-context): "Death visited rne this morning. We ingmar Bergman's are playing chess together. This reprieve gives me the chance to arrange an urgent matter" and "love is the blackest of all plagues, and if one could die of it, there would be some pleasure in love. But you almost always get over it." The above words and descriptions may imply to the reader that this film is beloved by me (if I may insert my unimportant self) only because it is just weird or bleak enough that I have to like it, and there is some Photo courtesy of Janus Films accuracy in that; however, "The Ingmar Bergman's "The Seventh Seal," can be found on DVD.
