Show Your Sports PAGE B8 MONDAY, MARCH 7, 2005 In the huddle Player spotlight: Trent Perry Zachary Fraser Sports Writer O What is the real reason the Utah Jazz are losing? This past off-season, it appeared that the Jazz might be taking a step in the right direction. Well maybe we were all wrong. The Jazz are currently in last place in the Northwest division of the Western Conference and they have the third worst record overall in the conference. Whatever happened to the high hopes of winning 50 games? The chances of that happening left town about as quickly as Carlos Arroyo. Preparations are being made: the Pacific States Kids playground is underway, the concessions kitchens are being built, and the grounds crew is taking advantage of this recent stretch of warm weather to get the field in top shape. This ballpark better be ready, because it will soon welcome a young man who has shot to the top of the baseball world in the past couple of weeks. Trent Perry, a barrel-chested first baseman from Sandy, Utah was recently named the National Player of the Week by Collegebaseballinsider.com, a website dedicated to tracking our National Pastime at the college levels. After hitting just 23 RBI all of last year, and struggling at the start of this season (2 of 11,1 RBI), Perry found an amazing groove against the Air Force Academy and North Dakota State, pounding four homeruns and collecting 16 RBI while going 10-18 over a four game stretch. 10-18; that is a batting average of .556. For baseball junkies, 11 of his 16 RBI came with two outs. That's good. "It's a neat thing that's happened for Trent," said Head Coach Steve Gardner. "I hope the rest of the school understands how hard it is to get that kind of exposure." Perry is not one that seeks the attention that he is getting, although he recognizes that it is good for the program. It's good to get some publicity and get people excited to see to some games this season," Perry said. CollegeBaseballInsider.com isn't the only publication that has recognized that Perry has exploded onto the scene. Base- ball America, one of the most spected baseball journals arou highlighted his, as they put "bonkers weekend" in Colorad While few may have expect this kind of breakout year, Perr| as a senior returning with tv letters, was looked to as a lea er on the team. He has alwayj been consistent for the Wolve ines, but the coaching staff tol him they expected more out o him in 2005. "They expect a lot," he said "They want a solid player who| is able to play with emotion not by emotion, someone they can rely on to get the job done day in and day out." As a senior this year, they challenged him to make it a special year. "They told me to leave everything on the field, and to make sure there are no regrets when I am done." Does Perry see himself with a future in professional baseball? That question was answered very simply. "No." Pro ball or not, the Wolverines have in Perry the kind of talent that can carry the team a long way. And they'll need it, considering the teams' preparing to face the rest of the season, which includes Arizona (currently ranked ninth by Baseball America), Washington (currently ranked 19th), and Arizona State, which as of this week is just outside the Top 25.
