Frequently featured on 'top cult film' lists, including Entertainment Weekly's Top 50, "Heathers" definitely holds its own in some American circles. Directed by Michael Lehmann, this dark, comic story about high school cliques, angst, murder, and suicide remains as funny as ever. The title refers to the three most popular students at Westerburg High School, all of whom are named Heather. They are of course snobby, and are condescending toward lesser students. Veronica (Winona Ryder) is the lone member of the clique who not only has a name other than Heather, but she is also the only one to maintain some sort of sympathy for other students, thus finding herself struggling with an inner-conflict between her enjoyment of being popular and her hatred of what that popularity seems to entail. J.D. (Christian Slater) comes along looking to subvert the establishment of the school, and before long the two of them are mak- ing changes. Initially smallminded enough, the swallowing of Draino by one of the Heathers eventually spirals deeper and deeper into multiple murders (most of which are framed as suicides) before Veronica discovers she has to leave J.D. Before we could foresee the miseries of "Mr. Deeds" or "Alien: Resurrection," Winona Ryder made this film and thus (along perhaps with "Beetlejuice") earned a devout, sometimes-obsessive following among many of America's disgruntled, often unintelligent youth like myself. Aside perhaps from his role in "True Romance," this is also Christian Slater's most interesting performance, in my opinion. Written by Daniel Waters ("Batman Returns"), the script remains as funny today as it was back then. It is possible that some of this rosy acclaim could be discarded due to nostalgia, as the first time I saw the film, I was not yet even in high school. Nevertheless, watching it again now, I still find it to be bitterly hysterical, and I can sort of remember where that Winona Ryder infatuation came from in the first place. Welcomed then, as it is now, as a darker, less irritating teenage 80s movie than 5-day International TESOL certification course Free seminar - 7:00 PM 1st & 3rd Mondays 1739 S.
