And as Utah hosts over 60 such events every year (second only to Texas in number of pageants per capita), most of us are no strangers to, and most likely cynical of, the Miss America Pageant. In recent years, pageant coordinators have fought against this stereotype by altering scoring guidelines, stressing the importance of "moral standing" (who can forget Vanessa Williams?) and focusing on contestants' platform issues. This Wednesday marks the 25th anniversary of the Miss UVSC Pageant, in which the winner, or "titleholder," has the ability to represent her school at both the Miss Utah and Miss America Pageants. Nine contestants will compete in five categories, including talent (30 percent of total score), swim wear (10 percent), an on-stage question (10 percent), eveningwear (10 percent) and a private interview (40 percent). As is evident, the pageant focuses on contestants' ability to communicate, comprising 50 percent of their final score. Miss UVSC serves as ambassador for the school, participating in various service works throughout the year. Her only tangible reward is a full-tuition scholarship (the two runners-up receive halftuition), which is coming under some scrutiny in the upcoming Homecoming discussion panel for questions/ concerns surrounding allotment of scholarship dollars. Current titleholder Carly Tooke will be defending the continuation of the program by participating in the panel, and holds that the scholarship is well earned through the service responsibilities that donning the crown requires. "The crown has four points, which represent the four S's," Tooke says. These are, "scholarship, scholastics, success and service." Rebeka Grulich, the Miss UVSC Pageant Director, has been involved with the pro- i gram since 1992, and is ap- ; proaching her fifth year as j director. "I believe in the pag- ; eant because it is empower- ' ing for women," she said, "it showcases women's true intelligence, while proving that | brains can and do coincide with beauty and grace." r Tiffani Christie The Billboard Top 5 Seventeen Days Three Doors Down O £tm Documentary - The Game American Idiot-Green Day 3.
