Show p r\9 2005 Your Business PAGE B5 Preparing for the 2005 Internship and Career Fair Brian Brimall Your Business Contributor If you're a student, you are probably looking forward to a rewarding career following graduation. Many students have an idea of what they would like to do, but are not sure what company or organization they would like to work for. The 2005 Internship and Career Fair provides one of the best opportunities for students to meet employers, network, and find job openings. This fair is Utah Valley State College's largest campus wide career event. It's going to be held on Jan. 25 in the Student Center Grande Ballroom. The participating employers are accepting resumes and interviews, and are ready to hire qualified applicants. If you are a student looking for full-time, career employment, an internship and co-op position, networking to develop contacts and build relationships, and/or just exploring career and employer options, then you'll want to attend the 2005 Internship and Career Fair. Check the UV Job Board to see what employers are attending, and decide which employers you would like to speak with at the fair. Know as much as possible about your target employers beforehand. You will want to show that you know something about the company, and express why you are interested in the organization. You should be able to briefly share how your background relates to what you know about the organization's employee needs. Think of some questions a potential employer might ask you, and determine in advance how you would answer them. Be sure to ask the employer questions that demonstrate effective preparation and thought. Prepare a resume and bring enough copies to give to each of the employers you are interested in, plus a few extras, just in case. Dress professionally. Women: wear a skirt and a blouse or suit. Men: wear a shirt and tie with slacks at a minimum; a sports jacket or suit is even better. When you introduce yourself to a recruiter, speak clearly, maintain eye contact and offer a firm handshake. Present yourself confidently. You are looking for the best company/employer to work for, and the employer is looking for the best employee. You must think of every contact you make as a preliminary interview. Recruiters will size you up to see if you fit the prevailing culture in the company, as well as the culture the company is trying to create. You should make the same kinds of judgments about the Courtesy Photo/h qmsinc.com Walk the walk, talk the talk and look the look whenever you meet with a potential employer. recruiters as you visit with them. Ask for a business card as well as the name and telephone number of a contact person in the organization. Make sure you spell the name correctly. Find out from the recruiter how you can best follow-up. Ask when you can expect to hear from them, or when it would be appropriate for you to call or write. If you haven't heard from the recruiter in the specified time frame, call or write to remind them of your discussion at the recent career fair and request further contact.
