Show Your News MONDAY, JANUARY 24, 2005 PAGEA12 hooge's heroes Dr. Jingdong Liang UVSC professor a witness to the events of Tiananmen Square Hanna Hooge Senior News Writer Chinese students in Tiananmen Square began a demonstration for democratic reform in April of 1989. By May 20, Martial law was declared. The protesters demanded that the leadership resign, but the government answered on the nights of June 3 and 4 with troops and tanks, killing thousands. Jingdong Liang, a communications professor at UVSG, was there to witness it first hand. Hanna - Tell me about your experience at Tiananmen Square. Liang - I went there and I saw hundreds of thousands of people marching. They held banners and boards. Some of the banners they held were written in English. They held "Absolutely Corrupt" and "Give me liberty or give me death". I think they wrote these slogans in English for international press. They came on bicycles, motorbikes, trucks, buses, and any transportation they could find. On the news, the government announced there would be something in the evening. They advised the citizens not to go out that night. I was a young student and I was very curious, so instead of going home I went to Tiananmen Square. Around 9 p.m. I saw some armed policemen march in Jingdong Liang is a communications professor at UVSC. Andy Hunt/NetXNews Hanna Hooge/ NetXNews Jesse Goodwin, who had been a fixture around the UVSC campus for years, died earlier this month. first. The citizens tried to stop them. They couldn't find rocks to throw, so they dug up blocks of cement from the old paved roads. They threw the blocks at the police, and the police were beaten. Then later the real army came. They have more equipment and tanks. The citizens cannot match the soldiers and they used tanks to push away the cement blocks on the road and eventually arrived in Tiananmen Square. One thing that is different actually is that most Americans think that the army opened fire in Tiananmen Square and killed everyone. That did not happen. They did not open fire in Tiananmen Square. It was very close range if you open fire you shoot at yourself. Hanna - If no one was killed in the square, where were they killed? Well, later I went west from Tiananmen Square about two or three miles, and I saw a line of students holding a flag with a university name on it. There was a tank coming very fast. I. had never seen a tank go that fast; like a car running on the freeway, but very loud. When the students saw the tank they became very angry so they threw rocks at it. Then the tank made a swerve and turned around very suddenly. During the turn it smashed the students. I saw it right in front of my eyes. I was about 30 feet away from what happened. There was one girl whose limbs were all severed. When the tank drove away, some local residents carried the bodies away into an alley. Editor-at-Large D. Though most did not know his name, many recognized the man who took care of the school. That dedicated cowboy was Jessie Lavar Goodwin. Goodwin passed away on January 11, 2005 at the age of 65. Goodwin led a life of devotion to his family and his work at Kennecott Copper, where he was employed for over 30 years. Goodwin was known for a kind heart and compassion for others. As reported in the Salt Lake Tribune, "He was the kind of guy that would give you the shirt off his back." Goodwin began working for UVSC in the grounds department four and half years ago. His colleagues call him a department icon. He will be missed not only for his commitment to UVSC, but also for the friend he was. Goodwin is survived by his wife LuDene Halladay, one son and two daughters, 17 grandchildren, and five great grandchildren. Memorial services were held January 15, 2005 in Lehi. Hanna - What happened after that? Liang - I saw other bodies during the day. At the time, I worked for a newspaper and we went to different parts of Beijing. Some of the bodies were soldiers and some were students. There were casualties on both sides. The point is that nobody died in Tiananmen Square, but no one wants to listen.
