The aad profit by the Logan municipal power plant la aurh a picture an baa been painted by Provo city official. e EDITORIAL S3. At every Logan city election for the past few years has been repeated the slogan, "The city electric light plant is no longer a matter of politics. And yet there are those in the city, who, if they succeeded in their schemes, would shut down the city plant as soon as their candidates had taken office. There are still those who smart under the defeat they were handed years ago by the champions of the municipal plant. They want the last laugh regardless what it is going to cost the rest of the citizens. That is why every Logan resident should think seriously about what he is going to do at the primary election Tuesday and again at the final election in . November. The city power plant is too valuable a pro perty to allow any one to close it down. It is saving every Logan resident and business man too much money to permit it to be idle in the future. Eventually it will make Logan a tax free city if it is permitted to be operated as it should. As a yardstick determining the fair price for electric energy it has benefitted the residents of every hamlet and every city in Utah through numerous reductions of power rates which have been forced on the public utility companies. In 1938 the Logan city electric light plant had a gross income of $106,256.11. After paying the operating expenses there remained a net operating income of $124,089.20. Those who complain that the city does not allow for a depreciation of the plant should be reminded that $33,000.00 was paid on the principal of the electric plant bonds and $17,748.80 as interest on those bonds. Subtracting those two payments from the operating 'income there remained a net profit of $73,340.40 on the plant in 1938. But that wasnt all the profit the plant brought Logan residents. It gave them a direct profit which was put right into their purses to spend for other things. A recent independent survey reveals that users of electricity in Logan saved for their own pockets more than $85,000 in 1938. In other words, they paid for their electricity $85,000 less than they would have done for a similar amount of energy had it been purchased from private utilities. Logan merchants should be heavy boosters for the municipal power plant, because they saved themselves about $35,000 on the commercial light service furnished them by the city plant. The survey shows that 385 patrons of the commercial light service of the city saved that amount because of the low rates for that particular service. One store alone, the heaviest user of electric light, saved about $1,500.00 during the year. Each one of about 300 patrons of that service saved from $6 to $110 a year. About 52 saved from $115 to $260 each during the year. About 29 others saved from $270 to $1,165 each in the year. During 1938 there were about 1,300 patrons of the residential combination service. They paid the city about $66,000.00 during the year for electricity for which Cache county residents outside of Logan city would have had to pay $101,000.00, or a saving of about $35,000. It is in the residential combination service where the greatest saving is noted. For instance, 22 users of about 36 kilowatt hours a month saved themselves about $12.25 each in the year; 60 users of about 145 kilowatt hours each saved a yearly amount of about $21.50 ; 44 users of 265 kilowatt hours a month saved themselves about $31.50 each, and 12 who used an averge of about 905 kilowatt hours a month were each $85.00 to the good for patronizing the city plant. There were in the city in 1938 about 1,829 patrons of the residential light service. They saved themselves about $8,000 during the year although about 100 of WANT ADS Bwewl md circuBee an make. lating heater, HoUaad Furnace Co. 471 W. In that particular service each one of 264 users of the minimum amount saved themselves about $5 each during the year, while about 300 users of 86 kilowatt hours a month saved themselves about $6.50 each. The city light department maintains a most dependable system. One Logan man whose business uses a great deal of power and who has conducted similar business institutions in others parts of the west, declares that he has been given a more dependable service by the Logan plant than he has ever enjoyed in other daces served by the larger utility companies. Statistics compiled by Supt. H. C. Maughn of the period the city city plant show that in the last has been without electricity for a total of 88 minutes, n the longest continued during those ten years was for only 59 minutes. Compared with the of other systems which pride themselves on their excellent facilities this is a most remarkable record one that cannot be duplicated elsewhere. So much good comes to every Logan resident from the municipal power system that it should be entrusted in the care of only those who are positively known to safeguard its welfare. ten-ye- HEINDSELMAN OPTICAL i citizen' committee, 1) 'nd then about it, only from worryln which wouldn't be half o bad.)
