These institutions and men have been of greater profit to the community in service, than any monetary profit they have reaped for themselves. These institutions and men have cheerfully given of their money and time for the upbuilding of the community in character and importance, not merely tjr selfish gain but to make our city and surrounding communities cultural and prosperous places in which to live. Are not these institutions and men entitled to live and enjoy the fruits of their labor or should they le relegated to the ash heap to be devoured by the wolves that wait outside, Watch the wolves, how they wait till the good things are ripe, ready to rush in tu reap the benefits of the years of conscientious hard worn by those institutions and men, doing so without cost in money or effort to themsclvcn. lias it come to pass that loyalty should go into d discard Can it he that we are so forgetful of who hnve institutions and professional inen, spent the major jHirt of their earnings to enhance the value of Prom, its surrounding communities and (lie State Are they not entitled to your first consideration f Isnt it to the best interests of nil to build ycur home institutions where the earnings remain in your town and county ! If we are to bring in outsido capital, let it lie manufacturing institutions that create pay rolls for our young men and women. Hotter not stress so imi,h on saving' hut more on producing, thereby creating more wealth for our town and county, Ask yourself, docs it make sense to destroy a certainty and replace it with an uncertainty! Let's lioine-owne- 4 A at Many citizens of this community who were friends of Private utility management, and opposed to Municipal or Government operation have become disgusted by the legal legerdemain, if not downright chicanery, which has characterized the attempts of to frustrate the expressed these Private wisl.es of the people at the polls. A number of reasons may be given for this change of heart on the part of so many people. First, it is prima facia evidence to them that whenever any cause is forced to resort to trickery and legal legerdemain to sustain its cause, that cause is unworthy in the minds of the unbiased citizen. Secondly, the average citizen thinks of courts in terms of local, district, and supreme courts, each having greater aud higher jurisdiction in order to dispose of increasingly important cases. But when tlio Supreme court, not only of Utah but also of United States, has spoken in definite and positive terms regarding the legality of the City Commis-s'ou- s efforts to bring Municipal power into existence here, then for the Private interests to befog the issue by aueals to district courts,' aud to attempt to eh the good name and reputation of the City officials by cries of illegal and wrongful acts, tho average citizen turns in disgust and refuses to lie a party any longer to such tactics. Private ownership has lost heavily in friendship and support during the last few weeks due to these subversive attacks on the integrity of Provo City officials. Thirdly, it is all too evident that such tactics are the stock in trade of the Power monoimly in this country. Few people believed such things were possible in an enlightened democracy until this fight took on the minister asiects it has taken on in Provo. But now thousands arc reading alwut it in other states. Here is an example in the State of Washington win ie the city of Spokane has lieen trying to secure Grand Coulee power for itself, hut where the local Miw i company saw the danger and succeeded in the city fathers to graut a franchise to the Washington Powrer company. Other public spirited citizens saw the sell out and opposed the proposition, insisting on a vote of the people. Attorneys of the Power company, which is owned and soul by tho Electric Bond and Shnre dug np a slate law, passed 3( j'ears ago, which says electric and street railway franchises are not subject to a referendum, despite the fact that in 1911 the city adopted n charter which gives the jicnplc the right to vote on all city franchises. An election was ordered for August 15, hut the local court stepiN-- in with an injunction asked for Then the judges decided to by tho Power close shop, and go off on their vacation. That means that the August 15 election will not be held and the whole matter will be tied np indefinitely in the courts. Now that's the sort of thing against which we rebel. Honestly we could make out a real brief for Private Ownership of Utilities, and fight diligently for one convictions, but under our lax system of regu mu-rest- FINAL SUMMER the lation and control, we wonder which to choose: devil or the deep Bea. fe At least when embarked on the deep sea, a to sails, his furl to low does have a fighting chance to set his course, to steer his ship, and to struggle so so is devil cunning, reach the harbor; hut tho in his subterfuges, subtle so and at times, pleasant tliat his victims always succumb to his temptations, and sell their souls under the delusion of security uud happiness.
