Pint Weat tnattor November It. 1937 at the poet Entered aa eecond-clae- a Act of March 1. 1871. under the offlre at Prove. Utah, The Statesmanship of Lincoln The Old Lincoln Greenback Lincolns birthday has .been duly observed. Republicans everywhere have rejoiced over their affiliation with the Great Emancipator. They have admired each other as disciples of tie Great Lincoln. Yet in all we have heard and read of speeches made on Lincolns Day nothing has been said about that quality of statesmanship which made Lincoln an object of assassination. Lincoln, the great Emancipator, was the successful president who held the Union together. Great as he was in keeping the United States from dividing the South from the North, he was greater still as the Peace Maker, cementing the nation together after such a terrible internecine struggle. No one can claim his assassination was due to bitterness from the South. The tiial of John Wilkes Booth and his associates who were responsible for his death proved that point. Lincolns death was due to certain policies he held to be the essence of democracy, the only means whereby a nation can remain free. He was killed because of his open avowal of the Governments right to issue its own money. He was assassinated by the agents of the Money Power in United States. Here are a few excerpts taken from his messages to Congress which shows his views on the Money question. Any student of Lincolns life who fails to see that the enmity which encircled him in those hectic days after the Civil war was engendered by the Money Interests has failed to read carefully the Life of Lincoln. The struggle for world domination by the Money Power centered in America after the Civil War, and Lincoln was the one object standing in the way of these International Bankers who sought control of the worlds finances. Believe it or not, like it or not, accept Lincolns judgment in the matter or not, just as you please, we present here the facts of Lincolns belief, just as he presented them to Congress, and by his avowal of this belief, became the target for the assassins bullet. Money is the creature of law and the creation of the original issue of money should be maintained as an exclusive monopoly of national government No duty is more imperative on the government than the duty it owes the people of furnishing them with a sound and uniform currency and of regulating the cir- culation of the medium of exchange so that labor will be protected from a vicious currency, and commerce will be facilitated by cheap and safe exchanges. "The available Bupply of gold and silver being wholly inadequate to permit the issuance of coins of intrinsic value or paper currency convertible into coin in the volume required to serve the needs of the people, some other basis for the issue of currency must be developed and some means other than that of convertibility into coin must be developed to prevent undue fluctuations in the value of paper currency or any other substitute for money of intrinsic value that may come into use. "The monetary, needs of increasing numbers of people advancing toward higher standards of living can and should be met by the government. Such needs can be seived by the issue of national currency and credit through the operation of a national banking system, lhe circulation of a medium of exchange ISSUED and backed by the government can be properly regulated, and redundancy of issue avoided by withdrawing from circulation such amounts as may be necessary by taxor otherwise. Government has the ation, power to regulate the currency and credit of the nation. "Government possessing the power to create and issue currency and credit as money and enjoying the right to withdraw both currency and credit from circulation by taxation and otherwise, need not and SHOULD NOT BORROW CAPITAL AT INTEREST as a means of financing government work and public enterprise. THEY SHOULD CREATE, ISSUE AND CIRCULATE ALL THE CURRENCY AND CREDIT NEEDED TO SATISFY THE SPENDING POWER OF GOVERNMENT AND THE BUYING POWER OF CONSUMERS. The privilege of creating and issuing money is not only the supreme prerogative of government, but it ip the govern- . ' sit ments greatest creative opportunity. "By the adoption of these principles, the long-fe- lt want for a uniform medium will be satisfied. THE . TAXPAYERS WILL BE SAVED IMMENSE SUMS IN INTEREST, DISCOUNTS, AND EXCHANGES. The financing of all public enterprize, the maintenance of stable government and ordered progress and the conduct of the treasury will become matters of practical adminis- (ration. The people can and will be furnished with a currency as safe as their own government. MONEY WILL CEASE TO BE MASTER, and become the servant New of humanity. Democi.;y will rise superior to Money Power The above extracts from Lincolns Congressional message, show the real quality of Lincolns statesmanship. No one reading it can doubt that Lincolns policy was intended to place the government, inBead of the banker, in control of the nations currency and credit. The peculiar thing is that the Republicans never mention it. It is almost as peculiar as the silence of most democrats about the same views held by Jefferson. and Used Furniture AT BARGAIN PRICES (llr J. B. Taylor) How dear to our heart the itory of Lincoln, In civil war day, how he freed the black alave; He issued scod money, a aonud a the nation. Without the consent of the Wall street knaves. 1 The old Lincoln Greenback was hailed as a treasure. Was good for debts private and public as well; And business then flourished in Increasing measure. Till Congress for Wall Streets exception clause fell. They killed Lincolns Greenback and later killed Lincoln, And at last came a panic that knocked things pell mell. They killed the old Greenback, the Ironclad Greenback, The honest old Greenback, that Abe loved so well. How dear to the heart of the fat money changer, Are the old party boesea, to Shylock 0 true, Eight financial Crimea, like the killing of silver. And the Federal Reserve act these boesea put through. Abe'e money was winning the fight for the nation. And the big Wall Street bosses were out In the cold; But soon they got busy with class legislation, And killed Lincolns Greenback, those gamblers In gold. They killed the old Greenback, the Ironclad Greenback, Tha honeat old Greenback, that Abe loved so well. )Iow ead to our hearta are the ecenes of depression, And over this nation presented to view; Tha millions of homeless denied the possession. Of comforts of life, in this land, atrange but true. And now far removed from the civil war loaaea, A tear of regret In our eyes seems to dwell. That the money trust handles the old party bosses. While we sigh for the Greenback that Abe loved so welL They killed the old Greenback, the Ironclad Greenback, The honest old Greenback, that Abe loved so well. And now after ell of man's made disasters, Shall we never wake up to our loved country'! call? Shall we still be the slaves of big financial masters, While the nation la tottering to Its downfall? How sweet It would be if the spirit of Lincoln, Could Inspire the people as he did of yore, And have Congress Issue all money; we're thlnkln. Wed travel the road of depression no more.
