IM aunmiiM ia m ram ONE OUT OF EVERY TWO hell-hole- One out of every two youths examined for army ervice since conscription has been rejected on physical grounds, according to Brig. Gen. E. L. Gruber, of Ft Leavenworth, Kansas, speaking before the Mens club of Westminster Congregational church in Kansas recently. "Our men have been living too soft a life. The physical, educational and moral influences of modern American life has not been ideally conducive to ing the type of youth vital to national defense in a time of crisis. The curriculum of the nations schools and colleges has not been wholly free of Pollyanna thinking. Instruction, in many cases, has included half truths. Too many men have been prepared for white collar jobs, and not enough for the blue denim jobs. That is Gen. Grubers conclusion. It is or should be a revelation to every citizen. Of all draftees in the nation, figures released show that less than 80 per cent have been qualified vocationally for any of the 275 skills of value to the army. That in itself should revolutionize our educational system. Add to that the fact that 50 per cent of our youth are unfit physically for the army, not 25 or SO per cent, which would be bad enough, and we get a picture of American youth which is not very encouraging. Yet another phase of this army officers statement needs attention: He said: "I am combatting elements' that shoud be combatted by civil authorities state and health authorities. He had in mind gambling, prostitution, and illegal sale of liquor. Are we so lethargic ini that we can take this evidence with a grain of salt, and HI do about it? nothing I, it" America needs to awaken. From this testimony, ,1t we have far worse foes "from within than any fifth columnists, unless we include the moral lechers. com-mand- . k ,' the bootlegger, and the keepers of brothels also as fifth Columnists. We believe that the great majority of American people are against such things. We think we are a democracy, and yet we, the majority of the people, allow and even condone such things in our community, perpetuated and fostered by 20 or 25 per cent of the people who make a profit out of such traffic. What is the matter in America that we cannot rise up as one man and denounce and do away with gambling s, all places Of prostitution, all sale of liquor to those who should not nave it, either because they can not afford it, or because they have not sense enough to leave it alone when they know the effect it has upon them? America injured 9,100,000 people in traffic accidents last year. How many of these accidents were due to liquor and drunken driving? It is an indictment upon the nation. If we do not repent we are not fit to survive in the crisis which faces us today.
