Wheeler, to oppose compulsory military service on the ground that there is no emergency and' that we are in no danger is evidence of an inability to comprehend the changes going on in the world. Those of you who heard Senator William II King recently in Provo must have been impressed that seditious aetion is going on under our noses all the time, and that the American sitnation is ' grave. I hear men and women ask: Why all this excitementf What are you getting all wrought up On all sides There is no one who can harm us. Take this compulsory military training for instance. Why do we need thatf We always got along without it. We still can. Even Senators Wheeler and Vandenberg use the is same arguments. They lay: Conscription It will destroy pur democracy. We do not need ft, and we can get all the soldiers we want by the voluntary system. Our military experts, however, declare that 400,000 men are immediately necessary to give this country the security it needs. Defeuse circles are convinced we can never get that many volunteers in the next three months at a pay rate of $21 a month. Enlistment in CCC camps lias fallen off considerably, mainly because the impression is abroad that CCC enrolleea will be the first to be called to military service. We mast remember the Army is NOT a tradition in United States. Not much desire exists among Americana for military, training, unless too There is that bang-ove- r we are forced to those who that we remember for the last from staywar, ed behind profit while those who step into military service sacrifice. A draft system is the only fair system. Switzerland trains every citizen for defense of that country. Snch action is more democratic than the voluntary system 'where only those get into the army who want adventure and are militarily inclined, or cant find anything else to do. Tho voluntary system connotes a soldier bonus system, which is entirely justified sa a reward for such service. But a compulsory system of military training sees to it that everyone does bis share in the defense program, and connotes a general old age insurance system as tho fairest method, except for those physically disabled through sendee. Of course compulsory training is a drag upon tho standard of living, and upon the economic set-u- p of any country. But this modern world, bo different from the world of even 1930, demands preparedness, and preparedness is more than merely spending money. It requires trained men to mako machines, trained men to operate machines, and training cannot bo accomplished except by selective service. Some must lie put to this work and some to that, each man filling his own niche in the defense program. A skilled worker in a fuctory producing essential commodities for the Army and Navy is quite as necessary as the armed sendee. Each man ranst lie maintained where he can do the most good. Whatever the compulsory military training hill may turn iiut to ho, 1 every mun between the nges of 18 and t!4 should lie required to register, and excepting for those physically haudicnpicd, or those engaged in key industries, or those with absolute dependents, all lietween 21 and 30 should be drafted for military sendee. This would provide some 3,000,000 men for military training, and would make available some 400,000 men by October 1, and 800,000 men by Jan. 1 who can be put into military sendee. Training should lie for a period of 12. months, after .which each man would pass into the reserves' and remain in that status, with an annual retraining period of one month until he reaches the age of about t. it e anpar-lntandenc-y: John Muuall, War-nic- k Swanaen and Erwin Jensen attended th Windsor ward Sunday School Sunday morning Mr. and Mrs. Howard Robertson of Helper were tho gaaata of Hr. and Hra.
