Show UTAH VALLEY NEWS Friday, March 15, 1940 ,,.l!. Utah ValleyMlMNews tr UTAH T Ktath IM iMta Utah, VALLEY FUBLUHIMQ uhr Its. Ca Utah Wart at Butler's 200,000 Die Needlessly The American Medical Association is on trial, not only in the U. S. Supreme Court of Appeals, but also in the homes of thousands upon thousands of our citizens. Not alone are the actions of R. Morris Feishbein, editor of the Journal of the AM.A. and Dr. Olin West, AM.A.s secretary, who have been indicted under the Sherman st Act, being tried, but the entire personnel of the Medical profession, as to how they stand toward the actions of their legal representatives, are being examined by the many thousands of people who are unable to secure adequate medical care. The present Court action grows out of the explusion of a doctor from membership in the A.M.A. because he accepted employment with the Group Health Inc. in Texas. The indictment accuses the A. M. A. officials of refusing to let doctors employed by the Cooperative to consult with those on Group Healths payroll. ' The present public sentiment has been created by the fact that 200,000 persons are dying needlessly every year in this country, and countless others are suffering from curable illnesses, as a direct result of the "fee . systemwhich keeps them away from the doctors and at the same time causes thousands of doctors to remain idle, and almost starving throughout the country. Dr. Hugh Cabot, of the Mayo clinic, ' is 'dutspokcn. Iii the matter, writing recently .in the AmeVicah magazine, decrying this same fee system, and annual budget asking for a chance for the plan of jpedfeal. care to be adopted. In part he says: "As a doctor.! am appalled at the .inadequate inferior, and terribly- expensive care the American people are receiving today. Two hundred thousand people are dying needlessly in this country every year. Heaven, knows how many others are'strug-glin- g along with ailments that need treatment. Certain75 per Cent of our population is missing out on care ly " 'and Cures1 which' discoveries of the last 50 years have made possible. .' "Provo was given a chance Wednesday evening to besf' officials of the Utah Medical Association explain .the .'pish. Medical plan, proposed and administered by the doctors themselves. This plan, though not yet available in print for study, has been publicized considerably, and talked about for more than a year in Utah. While it provides for "group medicine, and a "prepayment plan, it can in no sense be said to be "preventive medicine, nor can it be truly spoken of as "health insurance. It retains, so far as we can determine, all the essentials of the "fee system, and hence is entirely inadequate to meet the situation depicted by Dr. Cabot. It is not the "preventive medicine being ' sought by the Utah County Health Planning Committee. ! 579S . i ! t K $3.98 $10.95 I X H liOSNIAK H T T SoaQS . ' w i A . a part-tim- ' .
