Show Friday, January 27, 1939 UTAH VALLEY NEWS Utah Valley News URGES STUDY CLUBS PiMtabid every Friday morDtag by UTAH VALLEY PUBLISHING CO. T North matter November II, HIT at the poet Entered aa Mcoad-claa- a office at Prove. Utah, under the Act of March 1, 1171. Traffic Safety Club has presented Chief Henry East Provo's 0 and the Provo police department with sufficient "Safety Sallies" to distribute them over the city as an aid to safety for children in all school zones. It is a beginning in traffic safety education. The past year marked a decline in accident rate throughout the nation, but Utah did not share in this decline, her record actually showing an increase in traffic deaths. Utah county has no record to be proud of. Evidently something more than education" is necessary to bring about a 90 per cent reduction in motoring hazards which is the aim of the National Safety council. Law enforcement is an effective help to traffic safety. Law enforcement applies however all along the line, not just to our police, lYue, incompetent police and ticket fixing are conducive to lawlessness and increase the traffic hazards. But slothful prosecutors, and inefficient traffic courts are worse, because they are higher up, and bring disrepute upon the whole system. But the greatest menace to safety is a careless or drunken driver. We venture to say that whever a decrease in traffic accidents has occurred such a condition has been preceded by stricter traffic codes, the , training of traffic police, and the elimination of ticketfixing, and by cooperation of the people with the traffic police in safer driving. Tens of thousands of people died unnecessarily last year. Utah saw 219 of them slaughtered. Already Ten deaths have occurred from traffic accidents in 1939. Only when we want it will we have traffic safety. So long as we are willing to take a chance, bo long as we worship at the shrine of speed and carelessness and drunkeness will traffic accidents occur. The worst of it . is that the innocent suffer with the guilty, hence it becomes the business of every citizen to help enforce the law, and to assist the officers to chase down the 20-3- n : family of sevsutaeu to cook for.
