Show Think straight, stand firm, though alone; Youll pie self, your true friends and your God. James Henry Darlington Journal Successor to Public Opinion Volume One A WEEKLY NEWSMAGAZINE OF LOCAL AFFAIRS Number Thirty How Provo City Spends Its Tax Dollar Studies City Commission Treasurers Chart how Provo ipends its tax dollar brought to Almo B. Simmons, city treasurer, the appreciation of the city commission this week complete u he presented abreak-down chart showing a 1937. for of the expenditures Interest of the commission focused upon the various expense Analyzing items in relation to the present project of constructing a municl-- l pal power plant. The city trees-- j urer drew attention to the chart, ! showing the largest single item of expense during the year went to pay the Vtah Power and Light company'! street lighting bill. It will be noted that the amount paid to the Utah Power and Light company la much more than the total Interest paid on ALL the General Fund bonds. The cost to Provo city for street lights is more than 45 a day This means that a check is issued to the Utah Power and Light company each and every month fur more than one thousand four hundred dollars, stated Mr. Simmous. From the year 1925 to 1954 the property owners from First East and Center street to Fifth West paid a portion of the lighting of the whiteway. Since 1934 however this contract has been shifted to the general tax payers, without a raise In the tax levy. "From 1929 to July 1938 the individual property owner also paid a portion of the lighting of the streets from First South and Second University fcvenue to North and Flrat East, hut this contract has also expired. Therefore from July 1938 until the expiration of the Utah Power and Light company's franchise the general tax payers are paying the entire amount for street lights, and, in addition, during 1938 and from now on, they are paying and will pay more than ISO more each month, than during 1937, for the lighting of the overpaee down How And Where Provo City Spends Its Dollar (For the Year To 1937) W'rut Center street."
