Show Friday, June UTAH VALLEY NEWS Utah Valley News Defeatist Doctrine and Unemployment Everywhere we hear this doctrine : "Unemployment is here to stay. Only a certain amount of work exists. The machine age has definitely eliminated work for millions of people, and more and more the state must assume the responsibility of keeping its citizens. Whether by WPA or NYA or some other form of work relief this present age is forced to accept a program p of government help, the old days of having gone forever. Whenever a theory of any kind becomes a defeatist doctrine it is time to examine the theory and find its fallacy, because always in the worlds history opportunity has opened more abundantly with each succeeding age. Society stagnates only when the individuals composing it stagnate". Is it not true that a single inventor working in his attic has, in the past, generated in Ins own head work opportunities for thousands upon thousands? Work is the result of thought. Labor comes from ideas. Society is dynamic, not static, or fatalistic. The spirit of enterprise is the creator of opportunity. Government should regulate economic activity, but never discourage private enterprise. This defeatist doctrine of the scarcity of work and opportunity is the cause of many baneful activities of "pressure groups who "force Governments to act unwisely. For example, we refuse entrance to this land of refugees from Germany, one of the most inhuman acts of modern times. See that refugee ship turned from our shores with despair shuddering in every heart of them, when all that we own and are is the result of thousands upon thousands, yes millions, of refugees from the Old Lands coming to our shores for new opportunities and to get away from defeatist theories of the past. Likewise we pass laws preventing women from ' working, our "working wives bill having now come before 20 different states, and having actually passed four of them. Such legislation represents nothing, but the defeatist attitude that work is scarce, and may not go around. To deny women the right to work is the first step toward denying men the right to work. To deny privileges to any class or group is the first step toward denying privileges to all classes or groups and the beginning of authoi itarian government, which is the natural result of our present mode of thinking in this country. The fallacy that only a certain amount of work exists, and therefore governments must apportion it out to us all alike is the beginning of fascism and nazi-isin America. . an old car or a new ear, he must buy gssoline and tires. These are both basic and repeat industries always worthy of consideration. (10) AUTOMOBILES Although the automobile haa come to stay, the market may temporarily be oversaturated. It is a sound and fundamental industry, but it may rot now offer the opportunities which it did twenty years ago. Is it not time we looked about us for evidence of the truth that the world ia filled with more opportunity today than ever before in ail history? Ask any old timer today about conditions in his youth, and he wishes only for his youth to come to him again to try out ideas and self-hel- m plans which advancing age prevents him from attempting. Take Koger W. Babson, noted economist for it, and consider his analysis of todays opportunities. He suggests 12 industries of the present day which offer outstanding fields for endeavor: Batsons Analysis: (1) AIR CONDITIONING I especially have in new small houses and selling inmind dividual units. Hotels, offices, restaurants, and stores in the South and Central West must to survive. adopt (2) CHEMICALS Most chemical companies are aiieady prosperous, while the future offers untold possibilities. Most household articles will be made from plastics within a few years. 14) AUTOMATIC MACHINERY The mistaken attitude of labor leaders, plus the new Wage and Hour Act,' is forcing manufacturers to purchase more automatic machinery. Yet, probably not more than 20 per cent of the manufacturers are using as much automatic machine! y as they profitably could. (3) MERCHANDISING This includes stores, r, advertising, and other features of selling. Wherever goods are made or whoever makes them, they must be sold, irrespective of the value of the dollar or the character of our government. Trained merchandisers should always be in demand. tC) ELECTRICAL EQUIPMENT All divisions of the heavy industries, except building, are dull at the present time; but these industries must come back before the employment problem is finally solved. Manufacturers of heavy electrical equipment ahould be the first to prosper when this comeback develops. HOUSEHOLD EQUIPMENT There are many other new. forms of household equipment which snould come into general use. Ninety per cent of our homes may become obsolete within a few years. Homes will be purchased in the future, not for their appearance, bqi fur their interior equipment. (8) INVESTMENT BANKING With the large amount of money now piling up, the floodgates sometime must break through. Idle money ultimately burns a hole in ones pocket. After the stock exchanges are recognized and the SEC regulations modified, the investment business will again be prosperous. 9) GASOLINE AND TIRES Whether one has Passive renlxtanre" of the maii-oi-dc- () Bohemians In Cinch against German control proves the futility of conquest. either hy war or other furme of force.
