Show Friday, October UTAH VALLEY NEWS ta the power of education not half so ihrilling with to appreciate it God does not cast his pearls before He hides them up deeply, and only digging swine and struggle and persistence can find them whether in the precious minerals of the earth or the precious truths of Gods universe. Only "champions find the truth, in any line of endeavor, in any field of thought or action. Dempsey is right education is necessarily an ingredient of that "championship stuff. Uit, 1. 1K17 at a yort affiaa at Championship Stuff Jack Dempseys visit to his home town, Provo, g Monday night was an occasion for some he that recalled Jacobsen here. Elmer the natives J. by lived just across the street from the Dempsey family at one time. Kay V. Wentz, now of Orem was Jacks early teacher here. Every old timer in town had a story to tell about Jack Dempsey or the Dempsey family. But it remained for Jack himself to put the finger on the stuff that went into the making of a "Chamstock-takin- pion." The first thing Dempsey did which registered directly toward his goal, according to his own words, was the conviction that he wanted to be a champion, and that he COULD be one. He had had slugging enough tq kill any such desire in most boys. To be beat up and mauled into pulp only made him feel the urge more to get in the running where he could "give it" as well Thats something for every youngster as "take to remember: punishment kills some people it makes others. The second ingredient of a champion is CLEAN LIVING, says Jack Dempsey. That goes for every field of endeavor. Whether one wants athletics, or bookkeeping, art or science, chemistry or physics, whatever field he enters he needs a clear head and a strong body. Jack urged that no boy under 21 years of age should touch a drop of liquor or tamper with tobacco in any form. His saying so will go farther with moat boys than all the sermons they have heard from all the pulpits in the city. Jack Dempsey has the truth on two vital factors which go into the making of Cham- ions. The third factor is education. Dempsey admits his handicap. Many a time he would have risen higher and nobler had he continued his schooling, instead of dropping out at the eighth grade, he regretted to say. So does many a man in his later life. Its just so easy to find excuses for not doing the "hard thing," and studying is one of the hardest things on earth for a growing boy to do. The world is so attractive, the outdoor beckons so delightfully that these stuffy old books are motheaten and crumby to every boy who peers into them on a lazy Spring morning. "Why sthy here? Comean, lets go some places, is the urge away from the school room. But Dempsey knows to his sorrow that that appeal Is false and disillusionment comes. They must put all belligerent nations on a "cash and carry basis sell them all the arms or contraband they wish to buy, providing they pay cash and carry it home at their own risk with their own boats and their own crews. All Americans should be warned that they travel at their own risk and give American investors every moral support possible but no armed protection. In other words, war debts can not be made if transactions are in cash. Our boats and citizens cannot be sunk if they stay off the water . . . and American youth cannot be traded for copper pennies if foreign protection is cancelled. With these many war excuses out of the way war simmers down to just getting mad at somebody . . . and the nation cannot get mad if John Q. Citizen has nothing to get mad about" S. L. Times. Mr. and Mrs. Odeal Kirk of Magna visited their parents here SPECIAL IZ wealth and freedom of the natoins and the lives of citizens, we in America are setting up barriers penalizing our social and economic life. State governments establish barriers against free movement of property ana enact persons from one state to another. Legislatures laws which prohibit vehicles of certain, dimensions and weights from crossing the state line into another, while neighboring states exact toll for the use of the highways builded for transportation. Articles manufactured in one state are taxed before they may enter a neighboring state. Products of the farm are not permitted sale in neighboring communities because a state line intervenes. Trucks moving in interstate commerce are. quired to pay duty before they may pass over the highways of adjoining states. In an effort to gain some imaginary advantage, citizens from one state are penalized for doing business in a neighboring state and yet' we are not a group of nations, but one nation, one people. We have at least one advantage, however. We are not called to bear arms in defending state lines. However, just as in Europe where national boundaries are so costly to maintain, barriers erected by one state against another are costly to its citizens. The removal of the barriers making possible a free flow of interstate traffic would mean millions to farmers manufacturers, merchants, but most of all Intermountain Transporter MILLIONS to consumers. 6th, i: WITH YOUR NW HOME I Lumber is the most important thing you put into you home.
