Ask the women of these men if liquor store closing hours have anything to do with the family budget. Other merchants in this community, and in every other community in Utah, ought to rise up in indignation against the closing hours of the liquor stores. Money spent for liquor cannot buy flour, or sugar, or coal, or clothing. If the liquor business is really a business, why does it not conduct itself as a business? Why does it not conform to uniform dosing hours, and operate in the community as a legitimate business? If other stores dose at 5.30 or 6 pi m. then why should not the liquor store close at exactly the same time? Closing hours should be uniform. If the liquor store is to remain open till 11 p. m. we ought to open a dry goods store, and a good clothing store, and a first class grocery store, right alongside of the liquor store, all of them just as well lighted and all of them just as efficiently managed, and all of them remaining open till the liquor store also doses, giving the mothers and children of this community an even break for the family budget money, which today is being sunk in far too great a portion in the uncompetitive business of selling booze. Justice and truth. All true Americans thrill with pride at the hoisting of the flag, but do wo also rejoice in the security and protection It offers, and do we realise that this security and protection Involves responsibilities for each and every one of us individually! Let us pay tribute to the memory of those who purchased our protection, freedom and liberty with their own lifes blood, bnt let also prlxe that liberty as we prise our llvos, something beyond price, guarded by ue against whispering campaigns and foreign "Jams" propagated by endless campaigns among today's bewildered youth who are lured Into dreaming dreams of sunnier skies and greener pastures under some new regime. Would that all Americana would renew their pledge of allegiance on this "Flag Day, and In all honesty and sincerity esecute that promise, refusing to follow the quest of gold and gain, turning at long last to the Intelligent, constructive cooperation necessary to make this great land, the greatest on Earth today, the true home of all American Ideals for which the Red, White and Blue Is the perfect symbol. en-ella- u Closing Hours , . : Although disagreement exists in Provo as to the hours for closing business along .Center street and University avenue, the majority of Provo merchants are maintaining the 5:30 p. m. closing hours. Two concerns, according to reports, will not cooperate. What value exists in a uniform closing hour? About 20 per cent of Provos working population work In stores, according to arguments presented. ' To keep stores open another half hour would, aa everyone knows, keep those clerks at their posts at least another hour to care for customers remaining in the stores and to put things away afterward. An extra hour in the afternoon means not merely less relaxation, but likely none at all, for the afternoon has gone, and with it the opportunity to enjoy a little trip, or do a little work around home, or pursue some hobby. It is a distinct injustice to put that extra hour on any of the working people in the city. Then why not have a uniform closing hour? The .. answer seems to be found in the fact that one or two money grabbing managers refuse .to yield. They re-- . fuse to cooperate, prefering profits to fairness, and de-- , manding the last final hour of shopping largely because ether stores are closed and business swings to them. The business front in Provo otters some anomalies which need study by every business man. First, if uniform closing hours are good, why do the food stores remain open? Are they serving the public or merely grabbing money? So long as they remain open it is manifestly unfair for other stores to be closed up Second, why is the liquor store open till 11 p. m. every night, except on holidays? Is the liquor store a business? The liquor commission tries to run it strictly as such, and are using every device known to business to attract more customers, except that of direct newspaper advertising. ' Does the liquor store serve the public or is it a money grabbing institution? Certainly it is grabbing the money, and demanding it in cold cash, no checks accepted. Study its methods and you find every inducement being offered the public to patronize it. regardless of where the money comes from or how badly it might be needed elsewhere. What do liquor profits represent? The State commission seems quite proud of these profits, and attempts to show how they help to pay the revenue of the government required for carrying on other business. Is this a legitimate way to find revenue? Liquor profits represent, 75 to 90 per cent of it, money taken from other legitimate business. It represents money taken from the family buejpet which already is too meager to go round. It represents shoes, and stockings, little dresses, and warm underwear which many a child never got to wear.
