HIT at the poet - matter November II, Entered aa ancoud-daa- a at Provo, Utah, onder the Act of March I. 1171. Nothing has been proposed in Provo in recent months that has more potential and far reaching benefits than the proposal this week of the Recreation department for establishing play centers throughout the dty. This idea was first given public notice in the Utah Valley $ews in an article written by Elgin Oliphant, landscape architect, working on WPA projects, but Mrs. Jena V. Holland, suiiervisor of recreation here, informs us that the Recreation department has been working out details for some time prior to that The proposal has many things to recommend it. Children occupied in play centers, established near their own homes, are always near parental influence, though perhaps directed by paid supervisors for a period of each day. Furthermore they are away from the street and traffic hazards, and many precious lives may thus le saved. Under supervision of the right kind, youngsters even of age, learn quickly habits of and good sportsmanship, and develop physical and mental health favorable to happy living conditions both at home and at school later. A veritable deluge of applications should follow this announcement .of the Recreation department of Frovo dty. Neighborhood play centers are possible, and practical, and can how be established with but little cost to self-contr- ol pre-scho- ol the parents involved. Sometimes we stand in awe of the wonderful opportunities offered us in this age of the world, and sometimes wa are terribly chagrined to see the apathy and lack of desire on our part in using the fine things offered to us. Halloween! Few are the annual major occasions of the year which lend more to the joy of living than Halloween. It has come- to be a colorful, festive occasion in most American communities. It is an occasion for decorations, costumes, parties, and entertainment Herefs wishing everybody in Provo and district a Happy Halloween. Youll want to go places, do things, take somebody a gift enjoy guests in your home, take the family to a show, or go out and dine and dance. Whatever your entertainment we wish you lots of fun, with pleasure and satisfaction complete, not marred by depredatftnu which sometimes mark this occasion. About .the best way to prevent depredations too is to plan something really good for the youngsters. Cflatumo parties, with jade o lanterns, masks, witch costumes, and Other play novelties are opportunities for ezyresafon of the urge which otherwise sends youngsters Into fbrtddden paths on the streets and around private homes. - -- Adult Education Classes What has the WPA accomplished? We quote from the American Observer: In defense of its program WPA claims that families have been fed, clothed, sheltered, kept from discomfort and misery millions of needy children have been provided with hot lunches A Complete I 7r Lifes Assignments 69Gof$US (By MARY ELLEN CAIN) Recently I heard a young woman lecture about a book she had written. She said she wrote the book because she had to and because of that urge she was convinced that, in some way, fate had decreed that it was she who was to tell the world of the beauties and wonders of the place she loves best Not many of us, in this day of fears and worries accept our duties, either pleasant or unjdeasant, as being assigned to us as our part of a great plan. Neither do we accept our troubles or sorrows as such. It has been my privilege to know several persons who have accepted their misfortunes philosophically and went their way smiling. There is a happy, contented blind man, of whom I buy brooms, and brushes strange that he invariably comes to and the my door when I am indulging in a bit of self-pitlittle invalid woman who can see more beauty in the world and in the souls of people than can those who enjoy perfect Ladies Long Sleeve DRESSES 790 980 139 Special lot of Ladies New Felt Mlhsi DRESS HATS r .. m Ladies Silk and Rayon Acetate Dresses wi $1.98 Heavy Eero UNION SUITS 89e Value s Men's for Selling aj y; health. I shall never forget the courageous mother who has cared for her little invalid child over a period of several years atill always hoping, always praying, always smiling and being truly interested in the wefare of her neighbors and her friends. One day I had to tell her that she was one of the unsung heroes who silently have taught me the greatest lessons I have learned I hope that it made her cross a bit lighter just to know that through it she could teach others many, many things. My Mother always could smile and say, Well, perhaps there is a reason that our plana do not work out the way we wish, perhaps this thing we call "bad luck may be a Messing in disguise the Master works in a mysterious way His wonders to perform. Fortunate indeed are those who have the gift of accepting lifes assignments with a smile. But we all admire moat those who have reached the heights of understanding by 'minting slowly through difficulties, handicaps and srrrows.
