Good telethem out of industry long enough to give them the phone aervtee In a rural section muat depend on tho spirit of tho training they needed. That is exactly what the Vocational division of the Ooldaa Rule. If one subscriber on tho lino monopolises the time Provo Youths council has been arguing for a long time: la long visits, all other there is plenty of opportunity for trained men and wosuffer accordingly. men in this country. Unemployment is a matter -- rs re largely of training the right man for the right job. It is a problem of applying intelligent direction to our school problems. So long as we persist in turning out en mass thousands of young people trained only in the arts and for cultural purposes, then so long will we never catch p to the demands of industry. Weber college has been selected as one of five American junior colleges to send a representative to the General Education Board of America conference to be held in the East this fall. This means, in the words of Dr. Dixon, that "the Board has found in the curricula of these five colleges a way out of the educational puzzle now facing the country. The Board wishes to study this work with the idea of Installing it throughout the country." Weber college offers 60 vocational courses, and employs a state employment servant, E. W. Brophy, as a placement officer. Only one other school in the United State adopts this same plan, this being a junior college In Denver, While it is. true Provo has no junior college, and equally true that funds are not available under present conditions to establish such a school in Utah Valley as wef see in Weber Valley, yet neither fact is any reason for being discouraged or refusing to do something about Utah Valley needs a vocational school just as badly as does Weber Valley. Provo is growing faster than any other part of the state. Vocational training must be established here, whether by the junior college route, or by special enactment of the state legislature in setting up additional funds, or by revamping our present system under state legislation. The fact is that, regardless of the difficulties in the way, the school system here demands changing, but it will not be changed so long as the public is willing to go on as at present. Whoever and wherever the obstacle may be the people can remove it if they are aroused to the need. The impetus comes right now from our preparedness needs. We are discovering that it is not the soldier with his breast bared to the shafts of the enemy who is the backbone of our defense. We know today in our modern world and with modern warfare that the technical man with the power of his training is the basic fortifirstion p gainst a foreign threat of invasion or conquest. Thr.t being so, we look to our preparedness program to break asunder the Chinese shackles of custom and heredity which enthrall our educational system. PROJECTED FOR for approval there.
