A il- - As tho outcome of a mass moating, held in lrovo last Friday evening the following petition lias been laid before the city Council: Pico vo City, November 11, 1889. To the Honorable the Mayor and City Council of Provo City: Gentlemen: At a mass meeting of the citizens of Provo city, held in the Courthouse on the evening of the 9th inst., and called for the purpose of considering what, if any, inducements said city and it citizens would offer to the representatives of the Utah, Nevada & California Railroad, to make lrovo the initial point of their road, running southwesterly to the Pacific Coast, the following resolution was adopted: He it that it be the sense of this meeting that if the U., N. & R. R. will make Provo the initial point for the construction of tlie road to the Pacific Coast, and in accordance with their detailed proposition, we will give them two blocks of land upon the east or west part of tlie town, also away through the corporation, extending to the north of Provo canyon, which shall include one of tlie streets of the city; and also twenty acres of land within one and miles of the First National Bank: Provided, no title shall pass till 100 miles of road have been constructed, leading from Provo city; and Provided, the twenty acres mentioned shall not be given unless I lie company shall establish its machine shops and roundhouses at Provo. Said meeting also appointed a committee, consisting of the following-name- d persons, to wit: W. II. Sutherland. W.II. Brown, R. II. Dodd, J. I). Jones, Walter Scott, Peter Stubbs, Win. lrobert, Jr. S. S. Jones and J. M. Drake, to take the necessary steps to carry into effect the terms of the resolution. Tlie 'c waited on the managers of the I'iiilnuul company and submitted the resolution to them. They accepted the proiK sitimis therein contained, and signified their readiness to enter into a contract to commence their road within a short time. t a meeting of the committee this day, arrangements were made to perform the part enjoined by said resolution upon the citizens of this city, and an earnest effort is being made to secure the hearty of all in providing the means essential to obtain the promised two blocks of land, and the right of way through the corporate limits of Provo City, and to the mouth of Provo canyon. A consisting of the undersigned, was appointed by the aforesaid committee to present to your honorable body the matter contained ' the foregoing resolution and to petition for such aid and assistance from the city, represented by this body of men, in procuring said land, and providing such right oT way as under the charter could be granted. ' We feel that the benefits to be derived from construction of a railroad to the Pacific Coast, and commencing at this city and Iroin establishing here the headquarters of a railway so extensive, will fully compensate the people of our municipality for the bonus offered to tlie company. We respectfully ask that you wil see the prize within reach, and gener-ousel- y come to the front in aiding your constituents in carrying into effect the promise made. A right of way through the municipality is to be obtained, and from the city can only be secured the right of way through one of its streets. To this end in behalf of the committee, and of the citizens of Provo, a represented in mass meeting, we pray for such grant, and such futher assistance, as within your power can be H'' XXmitlri soifM.
