'Nil ' irrAII H lTLIlvi. l'm for Lust Friday evening the elcctrtc light plant just introduced in Irovo was in running order although it was not working finite as satisfactorily as it does now. At present the plant seems to lie in every way satisfactory. The lights are well scattered over the city, and give Irovo at night a most attractive and metropolitan appearance. Many business houses have or will introduce electricity for lighting purjioses and thus in another essential feature Provo has taken a handsome step in the line of modern improvement. The electric light plant itelongs to the Woolen Mills company, whose Siqierintendent, Mr. Heed Smoot, deserves special credit for his able management of the enterprise and his public spirit and financial sagacity in taking hold of the project and carrying it promptly into practical operut ion. THE ELECTRIC LIGHTS Unite with the Street llail way in effecting a remarkable transformation in the flourishing Garden Pity of Utah. The hand of progress has indeed laid linn hold on the city, and during the last year accomplished wonders in the way of growth and expensiou. Within a few months inagnilieeiit, new residences and store buildings have sprung up in all parts of Provo, The influx of capital has been steady, aud prosperity universal. Luljnr lias been in constant demand and every channel of industry and busiuess energy expanding in a healthful ami solid growth. Xo city in Utah has made a lielter record or more Located in the sultstanthil progress. unlKiunded of agricultural and ipidst mineral wealth in a most delight fid climate on the shores of a beautiful lake among scenic attractions unrivaled in tlu; whole world, the future greatness and grandeur of Irovo is secure. Xo person who lias never visitcil this city can form any idea of it natural glory and beauty. While riding on horse back over the foot hills ami jiitoRockCanyon the other evening just lie foie dark when the electric lights hud just lieen introduced the writer procured a most facluating view of Irovo and vacinity. Passing over a fertile country north of Provo for a mile or more we hint an excellent opportunity to observe the condition of the farmers who there flourish. Magnificent fields of golden grain greeted the eye on every hand. Perials and vegeiablc$ alike promise an enormous yield. Ascending to l)ie tiencli a similar scense of agricultural prosperity is ui hand, As the sun in the west sets in a halo of gold and Vermillion a sheen of mystic coloring is thrown over the green glory of the valley. The lofty promontories just back af the city catch tlie spirit of the hour and from their rugged sides and huge precipitous facades depict an imimsing and majestic As we advance towards grandeur. llock Canyon to a higher elevation tlie view becomes more ami more superb. Oil! that some artist with the genius of an Angelo could but transfer to canvas the gorgeous magnificence of this twilight view from this sjsit! Xo Alpine scene could surpass it on the one hand; no Italian landscape equal it upon the other. To the east the nioimfriins lifting crowns Into tlie etheriul their snow-cla- d cut into skies, deep canyons, and mod-le- d into crags and caves hy the grant upheavds of a prehistoric age, are mellowed hy the shades of approaching night into a realized dream of more than oriental charm. And looking westward from the base of those mountains, Utah Valley wraps the transparent robes of gathering evening lines around her, like a voluptious bride laying aside ber magic jewels in the gathering gloom. As the eye lingers Oil the vista the heart must indeed lie dead to tho ehanns of nature that does not feel an elevating ecstacy akin to transport. Just lielow us the emliowered city of Provo is clearly seen through the rare atmosphere. All around foliage aud fields of every line extend. And further westward glitters Utah Lake like a mirror of silver reflecting the mountains on the west side of the valley and com pleting the picture which no pen can describe and no brush adequately liortray. ed hue mill Broliilly Tmo Car uh1m 11 ns ft SreotalUrertloniJInljM ml'h oaeh Ho x. The culmination of Mr. Reed's picta-toria- l policy is found in the federal election bill which wus recently forced through the party causes of tlie house of representatives. The iiusetting of a few isolated Democrats with the aid of his followers, of the counting of members to make a quorum, are mild evidence of dictatorship compared to tlie party lash which Mr. Read applied with vigor in scouring tlie speakership.
