The work was commenced under rather adverse circumstances, but pushed ahead witli commendable alacrity. Though commenced late in the season it was completed in time to do a rushing business tor several weeks, in carrying pleasure seekers to the shores of our lovely lake. Hundreds rode on the neat little train every day, and the company piled up the shekels. Rut the run was not long enough, and the expense of construction has been very great, so the company finds it necessary to urge that all who have not fully paid up their assessments do so at once. We hope this request will be fully responded to and the railway company be placed in a position to push the they have in contemplation. HORRIBLE FIRE. SCENES OF AN AWFUL CALAMITY GRAPHICALLY WRITTEN. Number lerlli In the A llHtreMlnK Sprclurle Syracuse, Oct. 15. What proved to be the most disasteruus fire that has visited Syracuse for many years was discovered in the Leland Hotel at 12:30 oclock this morning. It is now 2 oclock and the file is still burning fiercely, although, the entire fire department, consisting of nine engines, are working hard to save further loss of life and limbs. . An eye witness of the fire says positively that at least twerty-fiv- e persons lost their lives, and many more were injured. One woman was being lowered from a window by the aid of a rope. She had reached a point opposite the third story when the rope became ignited from the burning sill. The rope parted and the woman fell to the pavement. Her brains were dashed out and the body flattened into a shapeless mass. All is confusion and excitement. So great is the confusion and excitement that the identv of those killed is wholly unknown. Undertakers and ambulances are flying in- all directions, and the streets in the neighborhood of the hotel are thronged with excited crowds of people. Frank Carey of Glen's Fails, New York, has been identified us one. of those burned to death. Many people! climbing out of the window the dames enveloped her and she fell back into the building and perished. Seven or eight men and children jumped from their upper stories onto a shed in the rear of the hotel. At one time seven persons were struggling together on the Blied, which had already caught fire from flying sparks, victims were half naked, and several of them were seen to tear off their dergarments that had caught on One women lay on the ground she had falleH, tearing the hair her head. Her hair had caught and it waB with difficulty that flames were quenched. Site, together with others who had jumped from the rear windows, was picked up and carried on a streclier to n saloon in the neighborhood. In this saloon several es in all posi-- ; persons lay on One women was Annin tions. Schwartz, a laundry girl employed in the hotel. Site was rescued from the fourth floor by a colored mail. A remarkable coincidence is tilt fact a meeting of insurance that ay adjusters of this State was to have taken place at the hotel. The proprietors of the hotel were J. Leland and Van Ruren Leland, who are also proprietors of and are Interested in ya lions other large hotels in different cities throughout the United States. One of the firemen tohl the story of a woman who was killed by jumping: When we first came we were hampered by the telegraph wires on West Fayette street. While trying to raise a ladder ft became caught in the wires. A woman stood In the window crying for help. The flames were leaping out toward iier, and she was frantic with fright. I went np the ladder to cut the wires. While I was doing this she jumped, thinking we could not reach her, and the awful result was that she missed the net and was killed. It is now 4:25 o'clock, and although the hotel is still burning the fire department iiave the flames under control. There are four dead bodies lying at different undertaking establishment and one dead at the hospital. These bodies are yet unidentified. It will be utterly impossible to learn definitely to how many were burned to death and whose bodies will never be found. The doors of Gruy Bros,, shoe manufacturers across the street, were smashed in and several persons carried there on stretchers. The lolice Office was turned into a hospital and the patrol wagons into ambulance One of the most frightful Incidents of the fire was the terrible death of a women who jumped from the fifth story. Several policemen stood on the sidewalk holding nets ready to catch the guests as they jumped. Two persons, man and a woman, jumped into one of the nets almost at the same moment, and escaped with broken limbs. The next to jump was a woman who appeared in a window' on the fifth story in tier night clothes. She leaped out of the window and, missing tiie net, was dashed to pieces on the Btone sidewalk. She was picked up and re moved to the morgue. D. mUCK Lt.ZELLE icnnoxt. D. D. S. DENTIST. Extracted Notice No. 1897.
