Bachman, Jr., agent, room No.8, court house, Provo. Utah Payson, Utah Co., etc-Frice- A dreadful civil war seemed inevitable; indeed several small battles had already taken place when the lawful King of the islands died and the regal authority passed to an aider brother who pretended to be a prophet a. and spokesman of God as well as The conflict was by no means delayed or ayoided by the death of the king. The two prophets enflamed their followers with all the fanaticism of a mistaken belief that the immortal and eternal God led them to battle for the triumph of tlioir respective leaders. From the first the contending armies were about equally matched both in number and in zeal aud faught with equal desperation. No quarter was given or taken. Those of the rank and file who died upon the battle field in either army were promised by their leaders all the heritage of glory in the immortal world of spirits, and the heroism manifested in a thousand instances was phenominal. Battle after battle succeeded each other in rapid succession; hundreds were slain and women and children slaughtered until at the end of six months the whole island was depopulated except the two false prophets and some sixty followers about equally divided between each chieftain. And at length even these came to battle and slaughtered each other to the last man. Incredible as it may seem Bolubera was the last to die of all his army and his body was laid in the stone sepulchre already prepared for its reception by Laluila, with a favorite mistress who her maid of honor were the only human beings left to occupy the Isle Euliila, although even to this day the lost spirits of the slaughtered inhabitants of the glorious isle are believed to haunt the localities which they used to tenant when in the flesh. Such was the history unrolled to my vision in the garden of the hall of Alaula. After making this brief record of what passed before me in panoramic view I again streached myself beside my sleeying companions and was soon asleep. When I again awoke my companions weie still sleeping though the suu was already high in the sky. I roused them from their slumbers and after partaking liberally of fruits of various kinds we all went down towards the centre of the garden and enjoyed a bath in a basin of pure water which had evidently been designed for that purpose. Then we reclined for an hour or so upon the grass under a neighboring cocoa tree and after much discussion determined to venture in to the ball of Alaula once more in search of our lost companion. We endeavoied to gain admittance to the basement and finally succeeded but to no avail as we found it impossible to proceed in the dark and bad no light and could find none of any kind to aid us in finding our way Horn one appaitmeut to another. So after three or four unsucessful efforts we weie compelled to gfye up the project. Fortunately however we discovered our way through the basement of tbe ball out of the garden and early In the afternoon turned our faces towards the mountains of the interior of the island and once more began our ex- plorotions. We proceeded along a narrow road covered with moss and grass and in many places almost entirely embowel ed with overhanging trees often laden with choice tropical iiuit. After marching eagerly on for several miles we came to a higher region or table land hero we encountered a series of villiages and fowls but domestic of numbers large nowhere wild and were these latter be seen. to a human as theie being a we reached bad Towards evening tbe between elevation considerable two great mountains of tbe island and could obtain a clear view of the eastern and western shores of the isle. Then we came to an abrupt road hicli had been cut in tlie solid rock and which led us down to the other side of the mountains where we camped for the night and feasted on fruits and fowls the latter of wldch one of my companions killed. For several days we continued our explorations and at the end of a week two we discovered the ruins of what had no doubt been tlie capital of the island and which bore the name of Kaabuia if tlie inscriptions upon buildings were correctly deciphered. It was built at tbe mouth of a large canyon upon a large fertile plain. Out of the canyon came a large stream of water which we found full of fish and upon following the rivulet up a short distance amid the most sublime scenery, we found a number of large springs and near by a little opening in tbe gorge Bol-uber- Gam and Steam ALHen7ocf umIin Fitting Manufacturers and dealers in Steam Heaters, for Public and Private Buildings, DEVEYS Patent Tubular Iron Wheel-barrofor Miners and Farmers.
