We regard it as important that the people at large should know THE BENNETT CASE. what are the claims of both political parties in Utah. The real We publish in this issue the of the Peoples party lies strength ilicision of Judge Zane concerning in the intelligent understanding of the point of law of vital interest to the position of their opponents. the people of Utah, which was Therefore no fair can afford raised by the attorneys in the case to keep its readersjournal in ignorance of of one W. It was alleged by the prosecution Some time ago .we published THE UTAH VALLEY GAZETTC. - at-leng- that the defendant when he was a polygamist registered and voted and the evidence showed that the defendant had at one time been a polygamist but that at a time prior to the date of his registration he had in good faith ceased to be a polygamist by virtue of an agreement between his plural wife and himself to dissolve the polygamistic relationship, theretofore existing 'between them, which document rakes the character of a Church divorce in as much as it appears to have been witnessed by a Ward Church oilicial. The prosecution claimed that this document was not sufliciont to dissolve the polygamistic relationship and that only a pardon by the President of the United States c uld effect that result. Judge Zane decided that the church divorce was sufficient providing it was made and carried out in good faith which was not denied in this case by the prosecution. If this ruling holds good a similar act on the part of all polygamists in Utah will restore all of them to the rights of franchise and citizenship, and as a consequence the Peoples party will undoubtedly have very little difficulty in perpetuating its control of Salt Lake City at the' election next so-call- ed February. We are not eompetant to judge whether the decision is sound law or not, but we can say that it is a lofty proof of the disinterested integrity and honest impartiality of Hon. Charles S. Zane; for even if the dieision should be found incorrect it must be remembered that the Judge who made1 it did so knowing well that it would prove a seven blow to the party he has so long, ably and honestly upheld and still loves so much. NOT HALF PAID. At its last session tbo Provo City Council appropriated a pum of$.I0b to Mayor Duscnberry f5 cial services. Mr. TSyr been Mayor nf Pwn wll Xj- - pyfkllfiO a believe, received a dollar distinguished services. Not j$!ong since lie frankly told the City Fathers that he was tired of working for nothing and boarding himself and intimated that he would have to retire if he did not receive pay. We do ntit like the principle of money to pay officers for past services for which no pay was allowed, as everybody knew, when, the election took place. The establishment of sucti a precedent is not wise in our view. But the fact remains true that t!te $:i hi.OO which the mayor has just been paid would not in point .of tli the Declaration of Princiwhich the Peoples party in ples Salt Lake City uttered and this Liberal document is the opposition counter part of that Peoples party Therefore in order to platform. an get intelligent and clear view of the controversy it is neodfull that our readers should peruse both. We do not endorse cither the one or the other of the these party utterances; neither do we particularly refuse credit to either. Our object in publishing them is merely to present them as matters of news without prejudice. THE POPULAR METHOD. In discusiiirg the question of advertising an able cotemporary says that the merchant or manufacturer who hopes to do a large and sucy while adcessful business to the methods of a hering popular half century ago, will be disappointed. And so lie should. Any individual or firm who is unwilling to keep pace with modern progress and adjust his methods to the wants of his age, does not merit reasonsuccess; neither can he to to secure it ably expect any large degree. One of the most important innovations in modern business is advertising. By a very few it is still regarded with aver sion; but the large majority of intelligent purchasers realize their indebtedness to advertising for much of the valuable information which they possess about the qualities. varieties and special features of the goods which they purchase. They regard advertisements as so many speeches made to them, in which the merits or distinctive points of the article are more concisely and intelligently presented than is frequently done by salespeople, and if they feel the need of such an article they naturallv ask their dealer to show it. Instead of regarding advertising as suggestive of questionable quality, they are much more inclined to entertain :c in an article01"1, to-da- m,Vrta tl,e ti.se it. But the Middle Ages had their encyclopedias also, the greatest of which was the Speculum Mundi, of Vincent de Beauvaris, who was lector or liberian to St. Louis in the Thirteenth century. It was reprinted in four volumes as late as 1621 by tbe Benedictines of Arras. We pass over a number ot similiar works to which the revival of learning in the Sixteenth century gave birth, all of them having been frequently reprinted and in general use, until we arrive in the Seventeenth century at the historical dictionaries of ' Moreri and Bayle, which still retain their places in many is true that Fall REVELATIONS FROM THE GRAVE. Some strange things are revealed from the grave. The tomb of Edward the first of England who died in 1307 was opened January 2nd 1770, after 463 years had elapsed. Ilia body was as perfect as it was on the day of the bu rial. Canute the Dane who became ruler of England in 1017 and died nineteen years later was found by the workmen who repaired Winchester Cathedral in 1779, although he had been dead nearly 750 years his body appeared at fresh and plump as that of a person newly buried. During the reign of James 2nd of England, the remains of Thomas Gray, Marquis of Dorset were exhumed. lie was buried Oct. 2nd 1530 and disinterred in the summer of 160S 78 years after burial; yet the eyes hair nails and joints seemed perfectly fresh and lifelike. Robert Braybrook, who was consecrated bishop of London in 1381, and who died in 1404 and was burned in St. Pauls Cathedral was taken from tbe tomb after the great fire in 1066; he had laid in the tomb 242 years. However his remains were found and surprisingly fresh. The hair had grown to over a yard in length, and retained its luster as in life. The eyelids seemed plump and full, and upon being pulled apart revealed the color of the eyes. The workmen believed it a case of supernatural preservation and fled in terror from the scene. Pietro Rodriguez the Portugues jewelery who was accused before the tribunal of the Inquistion and burned alive in a vault, was found 206 years later by freebocters who destroyed the old Church in whieh he was hurried in hope of finding hidden treasures. Ilis hair and beard were firm, his skin natural in hue and texture, without the least trace of decomposition. His little daughter who was hurried with him was as perfectly preserved as her father. C.
