Show Victory In I960 YOUNG REPUBLICAN Part County Level III H. Fairbanks by Madge THE UTAH STATESMAN Page 2 Want To Be A Politician? For Aspiring Young GOPs byLa Verle M. Nielsen How can' I be an active participant on the local political scene? This question is often brought up by Young Republicans eager to begin a political career or just to help the party along. There are many avenues open and the best among them is to begin at the grass roots level right in your own neighborhood. The precinct or voting district has great need for interested individuals, willing to work. Especially are these workers going .to be needed in the coming campaigns during the next few years. Can I hold office on the voting district level? Yes, you can. In many, districts, it's no trick at all to be elected to a voting district position. In most cases, all you have to do is show a little interest. Let your interests be known and you sure in. First, plan to attend the mass meeting held in your district At the mass meeting elections are held for the position of district chairman, vice chairman, secretary, plus delegates to state and county conventions and representatives to the house district meetings. Decide beforehand which position you would like to hold. If necessary take some friends and neighbors to the mass meeting with you who will help nominate and elect you. You'll be doing them a service too by perhaps introducing them to the purposes and workings of the mass meetings for the first time. Many Young Republicans using this same simple plan were elected to serve as district chairmen and state and county convention delegates at the last mass meetings. The meetings will be held again next year. Plan now to attend, to make your wishes known and to be elected to some local district level job. In the final analysis, no campaign is successful unless it goes down to the level of the elector the men and women who cast the ballots. The party platform, the fine speeches of the candidates, the reasons why one should vote for one party over another, or any other influence the party might exert are of no consequence . . . mean absoluteif the voter is not ly nothing . . . are lost on the breeze impressed. The campaign dinners for special party groups . . . rallies for party workers, etc., are nice and perhaps necessary, but they don't bring new votes or voters into the fold. These people are already converted. The means must be found to reach beyond this group to your neighbor and mine . . . the citizens from every walk of life . . . influenced from many rides. This is our opportunity as Young Republicans on the basic level of political structure to exert our influence and tell the people of our own voting district die true Republican story. Aim now for a voting district position. Your party needs ... ... you! THE UTAH STATESMAN A Weekly Newspaper Devoted to Good Government HARRY B. MILLER, Publisher. H. V.
