Jack Curtice said Tuesday. Weve got good depth in all spots, except center and end, and although the boys are not big they have good speed and agility I look for a good season. Nearly without exception the Redskin gridders reported back for the first day of practice at the weight Curtice assigned them at the end of spring practice. Curtice says, We assign all the boys a reporting in weight and these kids have made a real effort to follow the script. I dont believe there are more than a couple of boys who didnt make the proposed weight. two-a-da- y practices with the morn- ing session getting underway at 10 a.m. and the afternoon session at 3:30. Early workouts have been mostly conditioning but some contact work was evidenced in the second day sessions. Curtice has stated that he will throw the ball a great deal more this year with about equal distribution between running and passing plays. The key to the Utes 1957 success may hinge on the ability of Curtices quarterbacks to fling the pigskin. Lee Grosscup, Wally Suba, Pete Haun, Ken Vierra and Terry Nofsinger are the prospective signal callers. Crosscup, Suba and Haun seem to be the top prospects at present but sophomores Vierra and Nofsinger could make the older hands hustle. Foreign Makes Increase Small Car Bug Bites Americans All of the big news for 1958 is not wrapped up in the models coming out of Detroit. One of the most important and significant developments for the U.S. car buyer will be the introduction this fall of many new makes of imported cars to the American market. European cars are no novelty in this country. If there has ever been a greater change in attitude toward invasion of this country by European small cars weve seen it now. The why of it must be purely economic: In 1954 total U.S. registration of foreign cars was 23,-38- 5. In 1955 that figure doubled with 51,658. Last year it almost to hit 91,042. doubled again The list of imports is long and Estimates for 1957 are 150,000 or more. impressive from the A.C. to the Zundapp. If variety is the spice of life, then there will be no cause to use pepper in place of oregano. Only recently a new small car, the Goliath, was introduced in this area. Others such as the German Opels and English Vauxhalls are to be introduced this fall. Such cars as Volkswagen, British Ford, DkW, and Metropolitan have been in the running for quite some time. What is it that makes the foreign cars so ever increasingly popular? For one thing, economy of operation seems to be the major selling device for the small cars. Many get as high as 40 miles to the gallon, such cars as Fiat and Goliath get as high as 55 mpg. Besides economy, European cars the something gives styling different for those who like someMany thing Mercedes-Benas MG, such cars, and Triumph, have a very definite Continental appeal. That the small foregin car is here to stay seems without question. With the advantages you gain from a small cars size, enabling you to whip through trafat a fic with greater ease and drivcost of 'half or a third the ing a domestic car, why shouldnt they remain? In the months to come, well certainly see that the foreign car invasion has just started. z, POLIO REHABILITATION NEUROMUSCULAR , Elizabeth sister , KENNY Foundation National Headquarters Minneapolis, Mina, HOW TO STRENGTHEN A UNION To insure clean and honest unionism, rank and file members should make a constructive effort to: O Attend all meetings. 2) Study the issues. 3) Make your voice heard. 4) Take an active interest in 1) 5) 6) 7) 8) X v. In fact the few cases where there have been flagrant abuses, it has been largely due to the failure of most members to show a conscientious interest in running their own union affairs. Two weeks after a neighborhood patio party, he was still raving about the barbecued chicken. Since we have no patio, not to mention an outdoor fireplace, 1 began to tire of this refrain. Then the light dawned. Of all things, I had forgotten the rotisserle on my Estate gas range! What with a barbecue meat oven for large cuts of meat, Id never gotten around to the revolving spit for trying smaller cuts. This morning I checked the instruction book and the Whirlpool people had made the directions so simple, I rushed right out and bought a couple of small chickens. Then I called my neighbor for her barbecue sauce recipe. Dinner was a masterpiece! Bill doubted that I had done the cooking until I ushered him into the kitchen for a demonstration. I told him how the chicken bastes itself and gets crisper skinned when its constantly turning. He was so intrigued with the revolving spit that he's planning to cook dinner tomorrow for the night with shish-kabo- b main course. One thing bothers me, though. If we ever do have a patio, how will I talk Bill into building an outdoor fireplace? Id sort of like one for atmosphere, at least. i Leaders to Meet September 9 In Mine Congress Leading members of the House of Representatives and the United States Senate, high-rankigovernment officials, and minig ng idustry experts will take part in the 1957 Metal Mining and Industrial Minerals Convention of the American Mining Congress at Salt Lake City, Utah, the week of September 9.
