Show Student 'Page 6 Life - Utah November State University todent Life USUSL Editorial The first session of the "Peace Center” The three main speakers Glenn Olds Harold Stassen and Richard G Hot-telall presented stimulating ideas Hot-telhowever talked more about present and historical fact rather than the long-ru- n goals of world peace Considering though that he was a last minute speaker for Paul Henri Spaak we couldn’t expect his remarks to blend perfectly with the theme of the conference The idea of world law being dominant over national law was brought out in the conference This is not a new idea but one which needs to be understood by those who want peace Unfortunately not too many people picked the idea this time around The growing population and developing technology of the world have been "burning the candle at both ends” That is the world population is expanding while technology brings the population "closer” together through improved transportation and communication The improved transportation and communication mixes the ideas and goods of the many countries Like it or not every man on earth is now our next door neighbor In relating to our neighbor we can be more constructive than ever with highly sophisticated "tools” and more destructive than ever with highly sophisticated weapons Some people might ask "Why world law?” "Why not let every country operate according to its own wishes leaving the is over other countries alone” This would be but unfortunately it is impossible We could compare the development of the world with the development of cities Because people lived closer together a man could not do as he wished without affecting others As technology increased man had more powerful machines and tools which further increased the extent he could affect others For example a man can walk on a sidewalk fairly well where he please but such random action would be chaotic on the nation’s highways So as technology and cooperation with others gives us increased benefits so do they bring necessary restrictions As the opportunity for tremendous achievement increase co does the opportunity for tremendous mistakes Thus stronger larger encompassing law is necessary good Until man subdues his nationalistic pride to the point that he will accept world law there will always be Koreas and Vietnams The world is now a city As long as a resident still dumps his garbage out the back window as he did in the country he will disturb other citizens As long as a man tries to be the "single top dog” In the city as he did in the country there will be no peace World law to be effective must be obeyed This puts the burden on the individual members of the countries Eventually a change in attitude on the part of the world citizens is necessary The world has a long way to go Dear Editor There is an old saying that goes "there is a time and a place for everything” I’m sure that I speak for the majority of students in saying "I’m glad that our team stomped the HELL out of BYU In reply to Blain R & Joyce C Wilson’s letter (SL Nov 10): Let’s keep S L a "worthwhile reflection of the studentbody’ and NOT necessarily a reflection of the LDS church doctrine EDWARD G SOLAR Condemned For Cheers'? Dear Sir: Pertaining to the recent letters objecting r words in cheers to the use of at ball games: what is so very wrong with a few curse words used in fun? Will we be condemned to perpetual hell because of it? And if one answers: "Well it’s the principle of the thing” I say that’s a four-lette- pretty weak argument Define principle! If people want to curse let them - - it should have no effect what so ever on the the people who overhear it Is this school so Puritanical that it still believes that when one says "Give ’Em Hell Aggies” he is telling our team to go out and condemn the opposing team to hell? s will And ten to one the never use the cheer I mentioned above merely because a few people objecting to such "shocking profanity” have had their letters published in this paper Hey man you’re no longer living a sheltered life communities It’s a in your home-towwide wild and shocking world out here if you take it as such Remember it is cheer-leader- n Packer Analysis who make it shocking by saying cursing is a dreadful sin MARTI LANE The Alienated Intellectual Categorized BYU Fools YOU There are several ways to define what an intellectual is People might think an intellectual is: 1 a person whose IQ is above 138 2 a person who knows how to think well 3 a person who has developed an interesting or complicated philosophy of life or 4 a person who has more education than the average individual Some intellectuals fit in with society some are only accomodated by society Other intellectuals become alienated often by preference - from the masse I will classify the latter The "quiet” intellectual This person or develops the ability to think Howes er he doesn’t talk about what he thinks He does his thinking without discussion He passes the "average” thinker by such a distance that if he ever does come to the point where he talks about his thoughts it’s too late His thinking is to "far out” for the commoner to understand Another problem with this type is that without discussion his thoughts re not perfected Many ideas are crystali ai before they are purified Ideas become improved if they are challenged and discussed The quiet intellectual misses out on this Ideas are usually developed from simple to complex They should be applied and explained the same way The "confirmed” intellectual This guy has the ability to think and develop ideas On the other hand he hasn’t developed -- Free Contraceptives AMSTERDAM AP — The Dutch government was urged Thursday to start sex education for primary-schoo- l children and to advise parents to limit their families to three The Netherlands whose 125 million population makes it one of the most densely peopled countries in the world is growing by more than 21000 persons a year The recommendations were made in a book "Sex in the Sixties” written bv Richter Roegholt and Dick van Reeuw ijk The authors also recommended that the government issue free contraceptives on doctors’ prescriptions Freeze On Price RIO DE JANEIRO AP — The government has decreed an extra dash of cool for Rio residents in the forthcoming below summer It put a freeze on of all drinks and beer soft prices to do things His brain works his mouth and hands don’t If good they should be put into shared This in itself takes confirmed intellectual worships The ability his own ability to think while his ability to do things rots and smoulders The "pseudo” intellectual This type just thinks that he can think better or deeper than average Thus he thinks he is different from others Unlike the above two classifications this type is more anxious to keep in touch with the "worshipping” masses Where possible he avoids discussion which might shake his confiAt other times he will dence in himself out speak openly when sure that the average person will be aware of this "pseudo” intellect’s tremendous logic and And the latter is extensive vocabulary important The "pseudo” intellect puts much weight on big words feeling others will think the big words must be accompanying big ideas There are three classifications True they are generalizations but they may serve as rallying points for thinking about the the ability well but ideas are action or subject Nadar Speaks Again! WASHINGTON AP — Author Ralph Nader charged today that slaughter and packing houses are making bad meat into good business and accused the Agriculture Department of "untoward submission" to industry pressures Nader who reached prominence as a critic of the automobile industry told a Senate Agriculture subcommittee there is "widespread deceptive marketing of diseased meat” most of it in plants which serve only a single state He urged passage of a bill which would have the federal government apply its meat inspection regulations to state plants within two years unless the states adopt equivalent programs of their own As matters stand now Nadar said 25 per cent of all meat processed in the United States escapes federal inspection and is subject only to what he called generally deficient state rules Another witness Andrew J Biemiller of the AFL-CIcalled for a new law to refederal quire inspection of all meat slaughtered and processed in this country He said a House-passebill to help states improve their meat inspection programs would not insure consumers against bad meat 7m By USUSL leaders Speaks For Majority More People: More Law Needed 1 People Dear Editor: This is a reply to Doug Porschet who is ashamed of Utah State After the BYU game I’m a guy who is proud of Utah State I’m proud of the Aggies the baifd the AggJcttes and the rest of the studentbody too Whether a person hails Mary or praises Joseph Smith when compared to Utah State BYU is always in second place Don’t feel bad Doug BYU has lots of people fooled If the game had been held in Provo you probably would have seen an excellent display of booing That’s one thing the Y excells in MAX KIND PS I’m proud of the Student Life too I believe the staff took the words right out of the mouths of the majority when they printed "STOMP HELL OUT OF BYU!’’ Senate Is Defended on personalities and not curable problems) asked for a law requiring that a Senator loose his vote after missing a vote three times without being represented Constituent pressure and pressure from College heads would see to it that a Senate seat didn’t go empty too often Finally how can you criticize objectively a body that is trying its hardest to represent the students - students who just don’t care? May I remind you that the attendance at Senate is thrown open to any student who wishes to attend So far the guest list is pretty small How can Senate act for from apathetic students without hearing them? In conclusion it is my observation (as one of those guests) that the Senate is and doing its job to the best of its ability that despite some occassional politics a done good representative job is being Miss Degn I do not oppose campus political parties but I heartily oppose gripers and complainers who don’t appreciate what is being done nor research into things far enough before griping Thanks for your time VINCENT O’NEIL Faculty Solved Problem Dear Editor: To Miss Degn Two years ago our Faculty Senate faced the same problems the Student Senate faces today We were apathetic felt that attendance was largely a waste of time and felt essentially we were listening to matters that had already been settled by the Administration Council Now all this has changed How? First of all we selected some young senators with ideas and energy Then we made some changes in procedural rules No issue could be brought to the Senate without having been scheduled for the Agenda by the Executive Committee No issue could be presented without a position paper first having been circulated in advance to each senator The result was that senators came informed and having had time to think about the issues In addition they could consult in advance with their constituents about the issues We still found we were getting behind in discussions so we now meet for a full hour and a half every two weeks instead of a bare hour The result has been that our staff feel they' can bring an issue to the Faculty Senate promptly and get a due hearing We now feel we are playing a much more important role in University government and get real satisfaction Attendance is much better In fact senators that can’t attend often send somebody in their place to serve So I wonder if your problems are much y different than ours Would having a the caliber system actually improve of senators and their wisdom Or might it fraction the campus into extremes so that senators fail to seek some common two-part- solution? ALLEN W STOKES Dear Editor: Loise Degn My aren’t we observant! And what do tell us that we you do for an encore don’t need any student government?? And my goodness for such a brilliant attack on the Senate as you made in Monday’s paper why were you afraid to use names? I mean after all with such a concise unprejudiced totally objective analyzis no one would have been offended to see their names in print Your observations on the problems must be well taken There is a problem in getting a bill on the floor as the procedure now stands There is a problem in Senators being unprepared - but be careful of which Senators you speak There is a problem in convincing Senators that they play an important part in school life but here we run into a problem again we are not speaking of all the Senators nor are we speaking of those people not discouraged by failure of their constituents to contact them with gripes or people not discouraged by articles such as yours It would seem there are indeed a great but now let's look at many problems the other side of the coin (I’m sure you won’t mind continuing your ohjertivitv this far) Senate is attempting to clear up the enbills perhaps tanglements of bogged-dowthis will be cleared up soon (after all almost a third of the year is shot) About that seating bill of Miss Arciaga’s (see that wasn’t so hard) the rule as n s such does no now exist The say something about six absences and make no mention of punishment or regulatory action The proposed bill which was shot down by an affectatious Exec council (now there is a real problem but that delves Zaugg See A Doctor! Dear Editor: To Mark Zaugg Perhaps you should see a doctor either of the above the neck or all over American male variety Any who can look in the mirror the morning after so publically announcing that he doesn’t like to see a girl in a mini-skir- t had better call the first man listed in the d phone book with a medical degree after h'S name Now come on admit that you needed editorial material A girl is far less revealed in a mini-skir- t than she is in a bathing suit shorts dance leotards and many evening dresses If seeing a girl in s is so upsetting to you perhaps it’s your motives that are all wrong Try adjusting to something new and I’m sure this problem of yours will be solved s I like Why?
