Show 2 — Student Interest G ood But Could Be Better The old age “What A Difference A Day Makes” might well be changed to “What A Difference A Year Makes” as it applies to Utah State University this year as compared to last year For this year much more than in this writer’s three previous years at this school students in general and the studentbody officers in particular are taking an interest in things that concern them and are doing investigation and work to better things that need to be bettered So far the 1966-6- 7 school year at USU might be coined “The Year Of The Issues” as much concern Is being expressed and much investigation being done in such areas as the student parking student wages registration and counseling These are areas which have needed to be touched upon here at USU for several years especially the student wage situation For some reason however no deep investigation into them and how they could be bettered has come about until this vear Why is this? The studentbody officers of former years were not lacking in competency far from it Why then did issues like the ones being tossed around now never get brought to light studied and discussed as they are being this year? We think it was because of a general change which is coming about among college students in general This change has been building up gradually and has become evident at different times in different areas and schools This is the year it is becoming evident at USU National and local professors and scholars are of the opinion that this year's college students have one dominant characteristic That is this year’s students seem not seen as much previously to be more reflective By being reflective they study issues at more depth finding out how the situation got to be the way it is and w hat possibilities and methods there are for change and improvement That is the reflective student studies things investigates them and then acts on them He doesn’t go off This reflective attitude seems characteristic of this year's AS-- l SU Senate and the investigative committees that have come out of it We congratulate this year’s ASUSU Senate on their efforts so far and hope they continue The group seems to understand d and argument well that a will be considered by administrators at much more length than one a fiery emotional The only thing now that is holding student government and incommittees back is the fact that there is still some half-cocke- d well-base- well-studie- d d d vestigative apathy among the general students As mentioned before the interest Is much higher now among students than it has been Still however there is room for improvement If Senate and the committees that come out of it are to be successful in bettering conditions such as wages and parking they are going to need the wholehearted support of the students A former Basic Communications teacher at this university has said that the student who walks around in his own little world not caring what goes on around him is actually dead intellectually This argument seems of good sense from here Sadly enough there always will be apathetic students who live In their own little world We would conclude by saving that the faster more students become interested in what’s happening here at USU the faster invessomething concrete will come out of Senate’s d tigations Student senate has gotten off to a fine start this year to bring the general studentbody the increased privileges it deserves It is now up to the students to support the Senate and its investigations beto see that the proposals and possibilities for improvement come reality Reader Speaks Out On Student Wages What do officials at USU exfrom student workers? Wages at USU are so low many students are embarrassed to admit what wage receive! in another While working summer area during the where living expenses munths were no higher than here I was surprised to find that most high school students were paid better wages for part time work than most student work- pect that they even ers at USU When I mentioned to people what wage I had been working for at USU they were both amazed and shocked as to how anyone could work for such a low wage Something must be done about wages very soon This year money for loans is tight and many students will be on money earned depending from part time jobs to get through school University officials promise a raise to $1 per hour starting in What are we supFebruary posed to do in the meantime? What about those students who started working for 85 cents per hour three or years ago and over this period very four New workers starting in February will be making the same wage as those who have worked for three four or even five years in some cases' This very thing has already happened in one area on campus All workers from the area were to be paid 95 cents per hour starting Nov 1 Some of the new workers were only making 85 cents or 90 cents per hour so this benefited them but how about those who had worked three or four years and were making 95 cents per hour already — isn’t this the same thing as cutting their wage? The Student Labor Relations Committee Is trying to find the answers to these and other questions about wages and working conditions If the administration has valid answers for these questions then they should be made known to students affected The committee cannot find these answers without the cooperation of all sudent workers and also students not employed The committee has my support and I hope all others will follow Ron Cali ' 1966 STUDENT LIFE nstrucf Or Wo nders At USUStudent Agitation Dear Editor vvno Those few malcontents insist on talking about “student power” (whatever that is) simply do not seem to understand that the majority of us really mean it when we say that “we like it here” Why all these cries urging students to “man the barricades?” Whom do they propose to fight? There are no tyrants here Where is the Louis XIV or George II or “Bull” Connor of USU? Non- sense! We of the faculty as well as administrators university and certainly the bulk of the student body are all reasonable Granted individuals may be a few trilling differences of opinion among us but surely no one believes are any really fundamental questions separating the faculty and administrators on one hand and the students on our there there the other So why all the agitation? Wouldn't it be more constructive if we sat down and discussed our few remaining differences like reasonable men and women? I realize the university is a large organization and that it is often dilli-cu- lt for individual students to make the necessary personal adjustments that will allow them to function in a positive way that will benefit both them-sel- v es and the university But why try to dream up supposed “student interests” which are distinct from the overall interests of the university itself? Clearly what is good for the university is good for the student and vice versa Isn’t 't only logical that the university would be concerned that everyone connected with it should be pleased and not disgruntled by that connection? After all hasn't it been proven pretty conclusively that happy people are productive people? I'm writing this because I think we ought to nip all this “student power” nonsense in the bud It is divisive and counterOf course they productive Mostly though I am concerned about the fate of these few malcontents themselves as individuals Why have they had such difficulty in making the necessary adjustments to the organizational demands of university life? How will they ever hold down a job in the great big very well organized world beyond these hallowed halls of ivy if they are not prepared to meet the organizational requirements of a prospective employer? Don’t they realize there is very little demand these days for trouble makers?
